Running repairs

Postby Doug » 27 Mar 2019, 20:44

I recently turned these finger pulls for a mate whilst doing them I noticed some run out with my chuck assembly which while I managed to overcome I wasn’t happy about

After a chat with an engineering mate I clocked the chuck & found it rotated with less than a thou runout

The problem was with the jaws so yesterday I nipped over to his & he kindly mounted the whole shooting match on his lathe & trued them up starting on the internal dovetail

He then moved onto the external dovetail

The finished chuck & jaws, he dressed every surface so hopefully however I want to use it it should now run true

If you want to see a short video of the machining it’s on my Instagram feed
Sadly I’ve not got chance to try the chuck out as I’ve been seconded to Rogers neck of the woods :?

As long as there's no run-out on his lathe ...

Only kidding, top job Doug, that kinda of stuff sends one round the twist until one get to grips with what going on.

He used his soft jaws Jimmy which he dressed before he started & then clocked the my chuck once he mounted it then adding as he usually does that "it's more than accurate for your wood turning"

I'm pleased it's done as I agree these things do drive me crazy
