LED Driver failure

Postby Malc2098 » 21 Jun 2019, 17:12

Having extolled the virtues of the LED Panels in my workshop, apart form the interference with the powerline wifi extender, one of the drivers blew today.

First I noticed the panel wasn't on while the other two were. I switched them off. Then I switched them back on and at that point there was a flash and bang in the driver and the circuit breaker tripped.

Any ideas?

How does one find a replacement, or do I have to buy another panel with driver?

Sadly this is all too common with modern led lighting. Even the ones with a power supply built in the lamp base.
CFLs were similar rarley achieving the rated lamp life before the power supply failed.
You ouught to be able get drivers indivually without buying a panel or throw the duff one back at the suppliers on the grounds it should last longer than the time you have had it.

Thanks, Bob.

I'll give Denman's a try. They've been reasonable so far.

They should replace it at 6 months old as you should have a reasonable expectation that it will last longer. Check your consumer rights if they aren't helpful.

I’m not surprised really, the longevity claims for LED’s seems wildly optimistic.

It seems the fuse didn't blow.

Any further ideas for me to lean on the supplier?

C1 has to work quite hard in these drivers and quite likely have failed
Makers will choose components on price in the hope they will last 12 months
R2 might have taken the strain once c1 failed.
Do check that the panel still works with another driver to save you a second trip to the supplier.

Thanks, Bob. The panel will go back, too, in any case.

Denman's replaced the panel and driver, no quibble. :)

I hope they gave you enough paperwork to support a fresh 12 month warranty not just an extension from the original purchase.

Ha! Their payment system insisted I be credited for the broken one and then I pay the same price for the new one. The only way I could get a piece of Denman paper with the date on it!!
