Motor won't start

Postby Woodpile » 31 Mar 2015, 18:34

My bandsaw has been strugling to start for some time, on occasion I have had to help it start by forcing the teeth of the saw down to get it going, am I right in thinking its probably the start capacitor?

Edit - the motor hums when I power it up but doesn't turn

There are three possible causes but the most likely by far is the failure of the starting capacitor.

these are common standard parts and there is no need to pay silly money for a manufacturers spare. Ebay is you best source. match the capacitance as closely as possible and the voltage should be at least as high as the old one. Types with either spade tags or flying leads are available. Choose the easiest to fit to suit your motor.

If you get stuck post a crystal clear photo of the lettering on the capacitor and the motor plate and I'll try and help.

Thanks Bob, I seem to recall you giving advice about start capacitors to someone in the past, I've taken the cover off and the cap is bulging, I've found a replacement on ebay for just over £6 delivered, thanks again Bob.

It is one of those fixes that does not cost much and has a very high probability of success and won't do any harm as capacitors do degrade with time.
Should this not work, then the next area to examine is the centrifugal switch inside the motor.
The nightmare final fault is a failed start winding which requires either motor replacement or a rewind but this is a pretty low probability.

Thanks Bob :D

Just wanted to let you know I've just fitted a new cap (£4.15 & free P&P from ebay) and it's working a treat again.
