Planner blade setup - confusion overtakes logic

Here's the place to talk about all your table saws, bandsaws, routers and dust extractors. In fact anything that makes noise and uses electrickery.

Planner blade setup - confusion overtakes logic

Postby justaskin » 13 Apr 2016, 07:55

I have just seen a Utube article on blade setup with magnets attached to a strip of wood all level on the out table, Then rotate the blade block so the top of the blade is TDC then let the last magnet lift the blade then tighten the locking block bolts.
I tried this but test strip of wood on the out table wouldn't move the recommended 3mm ish, as the blade was never in contact.

So which or who is correct is there any advantage?

Have you tried planing a piece of timber with the new set up?
Over the years I've read many ways on setting up blades but the proof is in the planing. If your blades are dead level with the outfeed table they won't move your piece of wood but should still cut.

Hi Doug

No I haven't tried using this setup yet, I was wondering the pro nd cons, I agree it should cut but what will happen if you now hold the planed portion to the out table with the in table set at say 1/2mm.

I do not need a disaster at my stage of life.

It should take a 1/2mm cut.
I have a Wadkin blade setting tool and set the blades on my Multico planer to be level with the out feed table, the wood should be feed across the cutter head and once there is enough to hold it down the pressure should be on the out feed table side.

My tool kit is almost complete, only a few more to get.

Try a slip of copier paper under the wooden strip. Should be about 4 thou which is the right sort of projection. A lot depends on how straight your wood is and how flush with that wood your magnets are.
