I agree with all the points re cutting large 8x4 sheets and I also use my Festool TS55 and guides with the sheet on a piece of Kingspan.

But I've had several bandsaws and never managed to get them set-up properly. Even with Steve Maskery's help! Most of my work was doors and windows and the bliss of simply running a large chunk of oak through the table saw effortlessly was a joy.

I'm very much at the tablesaw end of the spectrum and maybe I've been lucky but my early model Xcaliber TS once set up has been very accurate, reliable and repeatable.
I rarely rip full sheets on it, not because it won't do it but the degree of tidying up needed to get 8' clear on the infeed side in my shop. So it is rough cutting with a circular saw first or on several big projects getting a good mate to run the job on his CNC

However, watching Rob at work with his big Ax BS cutting veneers recently from a 9-10" wide board of red oak and getting 5 leaves from a 20mm PAR board with a well set up BS with a brand new blade (also from Ax) I was very very impressed.

A couple of points in setting up a bandsaw are crucial. First and foremost, the bottom of the gullet needs to be in the centre of the upper bandsaw tyre. Second and foremost, adjust the fence so it's parallel to the blade (Ax Bandsaw Buddy is good here), third and foremost, change the blade when it gets 'tired'. There's a lot of absolute tosh spoken 'elsewhere' about certain Tuff blades but Ax Diamond Ground are fandabby and last a goodly time. Fourth and foremost, make sure the guides are positioned correctly; when stationary they should just be clear of the blade, not touching - Rob

Looks a decent saw. I like both my TS and BS and while space is an issue for most hobbiests in the UK I will keep mine as long as I can deal with the space issues.

On the long fence concerns...mine had a long fence fixed both front and rear and regardless of any comments on here or Steve’s videos, I wouldn’t change it!

I am a big fan of Steve’s and have all his DVD’s so this is no criticism, but the extra stability given to the fence with both front and rear fixing is for me the main winner.

I get round the kickback concerns by fixing a short auxiliary fence in ply or mdf to the main metal one and this short fence stops just before the back edge of the blade.

Honestly I wouldn’t even factor this into your concerns when looking at saws as my fix is so easy it negates, in my opinion, any of the concerns raised.

I managed easily enough without a table saw for a year or so when I sold my old Wadkin, as has been said with a tracksaw & bandsaw most tasks that I did at the table saw were achievable & in most cases more easily.

Personally I would only have a table saw if it has a decent quality sliding table as that is where a table saw can come into its own, it doesn’t have to be a huge affair but it makes cross cutting components to length a breeze particularly when you want multiple pieces the same length & angle. This is basically the only operation I use the table saw for these days hence going for a combination machine as the spindle part of the machine gets far more use than the saw.

I placed the order in Mid December with a deposit.

Having not heard from S&S I contacted in Late January and asked for a delivery status.

Late February I was then told.

I contacted them again today, as late February had passed, and have now been told Mid-March

I was also told that S&S were aware of a delay of the ship leaving Taiwan because of Chinese New Year.

No-one bothered to let me know that.

My SS and SDIL and children went to Taiwan for Chinese New Year with her folks. They could have brought it back as hold luggage. ;)

Not impressed with S&S.

From what I’ve read extended delays are quite common with stuff coming from China.

A good few years back I and many others had Xcalibur tablesaws on back order for months with Woodford. One particular customer moaned bitterly and was offered a free dado set and conversion kit as a pacifier. He then posted on a forum about his fortunes and most of the rest of us also put our hands up for our freebies too.

To be fair to Woodford they coughed up dado sets all round!

& therein lies the problem with buying Chinese which does not end when you finally have the machine, when you need spares the wait can be longer, 18 weeks for the part for my one & only Chinese machine, I’ve learnt my lesson & wont be purchasing another Chinese machine.

No, I think it was a Silverline

Nope, Charnwood. Poxy thing was complete and utter bloody rubbish, but even my little Kity 417 wasn't all that accurate. I was speaking to one of the guys at Ax last year who dealt with machinery and I mentioned the issues I had with the Charnwood, whereupon he immediately said that they use the lowest quality stuff in all their machinery, which probably explains why the tablesaur was complete and utter dross. Even so, it (or any other saw) still took up far too much room in the 'shop - Rob

i know what you mean about charnwood i bought a WS616 a few years ago and it looked good but it was when i tried to calibrate it that it all went wrong

ive lived with it for a few years not but its actually packed up now and for the life of me i cannot find the fault i am a sparky by trade so i know my way round a meter but it trips my workshop main breaker but shows no fault and to add to the enigma if i remove some covers it works again bizzare but really not worth the effort to fix now

luckily i have WA ( wife approval) to get myself a SIP 01332 i did initially look at the itech but the delivery costs put me off

Fingers crossed it's all as it should be

Tbh I expected better from Scott & Sargent. I've got a few large machine purchases to do in the future and will remember this thread before proceeding.

Now carefully rip them open and start making some sawdust

However Malc might get distracted by all that pallet wood and be making new furniture for the house?

This is going to be fun getting it round the back and up the garden, and I do mean up!

It' also got to go through that gap by the iron gate.

177KGs!!!

Half way!!

It's by the back door. 4 steps and a grass incline tomorrow, methinks, with a neighbour's help.

Mission Control was wearing flip-flops.

I demoted her to tea making!

Sounds like you're making good progress ! How are you managing to move 177kilos or was that the overall weight of the pallet ?

Start with a compliment then go for the jugular!! :D

Gross weight 197KGs just of the saw box!

With difficulty and lengths of 45x95 I managed get it off the pallet and onto the front step.

With difficulty I managed to get it on to a wheeled dolly.

With difficulty I managed to get it round to the back door.

With difficulty I managed to get it up one step onto the patio.

With difficulty I managed to get it across the patio to the foot of the steps to the building level.

Then I decided to open the box which fell apart and I removed everything from inside the upside down saw, including the cast iron side tables. The main cast iron table is part of integral cabinet.

I then built a litter around the table, now the right way up, and just catching the edge of the table.

I can lift one end of the litter easily (hah!).

Tomorrow, I will seek out any mug of a neighbour and see if we can lift it up the steps and over the low wall and across the grass and up into the 'shop.

If we can't, Plan B is I put out a call on FB and got one local positive response for tomorrow eve. I will get two mugs of neighbours and my FB chum, and with promises of beer I reckon four of us should be able to do it!!

Currently, I've built a litter round it so two or four bods can lift it, I've wrapped it in a tarp because rain was forecast and is spitting and I've built the base and am just about to make up a couple of new lengths for the mobile base that I used for the previous saw.

I have access to bods this evening.
