Sedgwick MB rubber roller damage

Here's the place to talk about all your table saws, bandsaws, routers and dust extractors. In fact anything that makes noise and uses electrickery.

Sedgwick MB rubber roller damage

Postby Jimmy Mack » 21 Mar 2018, 13:16

This might be one for fellow MB flyer Roger S...?

I've had some minor wear, from maybe 4 years ago, on the rubber of the pressurised out-feed roller, but recently it's got much worse!

Originally I thought this was from putting chamfers (using a jig) on glazing beads, so I changed practice. Now I'm wondering if it's from thicknessing 20-35mm boards on their edge?

It's almost as if once the roller has some surface damage it's down hill from there and it starts to disintergrate.

Perhaps it's another cause... maybe I'm being too hard on the machine, and this is general wear as to be expected.... Maybe it's perished (don't think so)... I've not cleaned it with anything (eg. Thinners)

The usual Sedgwick 'special' pricing of £236.95 +vat! and possibly a bit of a PITA to switch out

Thoughts on cause welcome,

I've been giving this some more thought, and I'm thinking it might be because I'm taking too much material thicknessing an edge, partly accidentally, when the board isn't quite parallel, and slightly wider in places.

It's not ridiculously so, though might increase the risk of jamming or temporarily stopping the board and thus making the rubber roller wheel spin (burn rubber) on a briefly stationary board!

I need to rip the boards parallel before...

My preparation regime is to flatten one face and one edge at 90 degrees on the jointer. Trim the other edge with a dust cut referred to the rip fence and only then switching to the thicknesser.
I endeavour to use the full width of the thicknesser.
Your roller looks like you are mainly using the centre section of the machine. I can't quite see if there is roller damage or just surface dust and resin. I clean mine with white spirit from time to time.

Hi Jimmy

I can't really help either, I'm afraid. I didn't have that problem with my machine but then possibly not putting through as much as you are.

The only issue I had were black scuff marks in the timber that I could never pin down their origination.

Are you using the Barke turnblades as a matter of interest?

Your method is the correct one Bob, I feel my corner cutting has caught me out! There's a mixture of scuff marks, compression and loose bits of rubber, like one would get off a pencil rubber.

Theres still enough material to make contact across the board through compression, so I'm probably ok for a while, but it's on the shopping list... Then again prices seem to go up every week so perhaps I should bite the bullet and pick up a replacement.

Cheers Jim

No problem Roger. Perhaps a combination of usage and corner cutting, as above.

I use Tersa (style) knives, supplied by Doug at Cutting Solutions. I was very lucky to pick up the machine 2nd hand with a 4 knife Tersa system block - a huge time saver. My old Sedgwick PT could take me 45 minutes plus, just to swap out two knives!

It was the black scuff marks (they felt tacky too) that drew my attention to the issue.

It could be time to turn the knives over though.

I never use to be this tight before I moved to Yorkshire

Cheers Jim

My black marks were on the underside of the timber but the bed was squeaky clean.

Oh yes, I get those too, I get the same from my aluminium TS fence.

Could be something to do with carbon content in the casting?
