Cyclone with DX5000

Here's the place to talk about all your table saws, bandsaws, routers and dust extractors. In fact anything that makes noise and uses electrickery.

Cyclone with DX5000

Postby themissingelf » 04 May 2018, 09:45

I'm considering installing a cyclone with my Record DX5000. Things have come along a lot since I last looked at cyclones so I'm wondering what the latest trends and thoughts are?

This is one that I spotted: http://www.toolovation.co.uk/product_p/axd002040a.htm

Have you read this thread

Seems there are cheaper Chinese alternatives off ebay. And it is not too difficult to rig up for 4" or 100mm if required.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

That should do the trick especially as it’s a 4” one.
There’s lots of parts available on the net and you could probably make a similar one for a cheaper outlay.
I made a smaller 60mm one with a plastic bin which I can only run with one motor working on my DX5000. With two working it trips the pressure relieve valve I installed - may have to use a stronger magnet.

I made up a system with one of those chinese cyclone units and a plastic barrel. It works well with my Henry shop vac but the barrel is the weak link as it tends to collapse, as noted in the other thread. If you're making one be sure to get a robust container for the waste.

Interestingly, I had a peculiar reply from Oneida when I asked about compatibility:

Your system does not seem compatible with the Super Dust Deputy 4”. It may work, but the team is unfamiliar with your collector. We do have a 3” Dust Deputy VXC150001. Its $199 plus shipping and is a steel model, and you would need to get your own container. You would need to call in to place the order.

Does not inspire confidence... Why would I want a 3" cyclone for a 4" machine?!

N'theless - moving on... Found these drums.

Just make sure you have a bag large enough to slide over it for when you want to empty it. You'd be surprised at how much dust gets reintroduced into the air when you decant these things. DAMHIKT

Have a look at ...

https://www.ampulla.co.uk/Shop-For-Plas ... 1-170-114/

If you take the cyclone/separator off the top, the dust proof lid keeps the contents safe until you empty it.

If you have a pottery nearby, they use them for holding clay slip, so you might find one for a few beer tokens.

Thank you! Bookmarked! I was looking at metal to avoid the barrel collapsing in (as others have mentioned can happen). These look pretty tough.

Here’s mine - I reinforced the lid with a disc of plywood:

Morning all

I see what you mean about decanting now Roger.

I've got a Thein separator. On the underside of the base I routed a circular groove, into which the top of the barrel fits. Separator off,lid on.

TME You can control the vacuum with a relief valve. I think there's at least one thread on here about cyclones. Have a look in the search facility.

Cheers

Dave

I use a 60l steel drum for my DC/cyclone. Easy to lift with integral handles. Takes a while fill on sawdust and normal floor sweepings but the down side is that it needs regular attention if it is being fed by the planing machines.

Decants straight into sacks if the shavings are clean and non toxic ready for the horsey brigade or chicken keepers locally and if general mixed "dirty" waste with some metal dust too, it goes in the landfill wheely bin with domestic rubbish on top. I've ask the garden recycle bin people about the sawdust telling them it will be fine mixed into their compost process but they refuse to take it.

I emptied mine today

Mainly dust.

I was thicknessing some sycamore which produced these horrible shavings 3 to 4” long.
Had to use the DX direct with the 100mm pipe to get these to flow.
