Converting Record DX5000...

Here's the place to talk about all your table saws, bandsaws, routers and dust extractors. In fact anything that makes noise and uses electrickery.

Converting Record DX5000...

Postby themissingelf » 16 Jun 2018, 09:19

Hi,

I'm considering converting my DX5000 dust extractor to a floor stander. I'm thinking I would get away with replacing the base (bag, frame, etc) with the base from another record machine (DX4000?). Does anyone happen to know if this is possible?

Thanks

If the diameters match up and you get a good seal, then yes it should work.

I guess the alternative is to mount the 5000 on a stand.... Still larger than I need but I guess I keep the benefit of bags over emptying bins.

I find emptying bags on mine is a bit of a faff and stuff gets everywhere because of the cage.
I’ve started using my 60mm piped cyclone for smaller stuff and it’s drum is very easy to empty.
Now need a 100mm one for the DX when in planing mode.

Actually you're right. It's not quite as clean and simple as I'm deluding myself. One jolt of the machine and the filter deposits a plume of dust and it always happens after the bag is off! :D

I've mailed Record to check if the DX5000 lid will fit and whether I can buy the tub. Failing that I'll be looking for a spares/repair DX4000! (Or a swap with someone who wants to go to DX5000 from 4000).

I reckon that tub will be a standard size and lid fitting. It just does not make sense for Record to design and specify a custom size when off the shelf ones are used for storage and transport in a variety of sizes.

Even if not it should be easy enough to make an adaptor lid to a common size drum and not have to shell out for high priced record spares.

I believe the same, at least for the DX4000 and DX5000. Both seem to share the same overall dimensions except height. The other extractors are smaller.

 Hesitated and missed a newly listed DX4000 on eBay with a buy it now of £65! So frustrating!

I emptied mine yesterday and the bag does hold a lot of stuff.
The worst thing is cleaning the cloth filter - this time I used my other vac, then the DX using the cyclone to clean that!!

Can't you rig up a cyclone and drop box and do away with the hassle of cleaning filters?
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

Yes I’ll have to make another one for 100mm tubing.
The one I have is a 60mm one which will cope with most things using 1 motor (2 motors switched on is too powerful) but won’t work effectively on my P/T - the shavings jam the tubing.
I used the cyclone to clean the vac so it should have caught the fine dust.

Yes the guy who used to make the kits did them in batches when there was enough interest and put the site up when he was interested in making a fresh batch. Was a few years ago sine I saw him offering them for sale. E
I expect he feels he has saturated the DIY market. I might have his email around some where if you like?

Whether it still works I don't know.

Mission accomplished! My DX5000 is now a DX4000! That does mean I now have the base and, I think, some bags from a DX5000 available if anyone is interested?
