Table Saw Dust Extraction Adapters?

Here's the place to talk about all your table saws, bandsaws, routers and dust extractors. In fact anything that makes noise and uses electrickery.

Table Saw Dust Extraction Adapters?

Postby themissingelf » 27 Jun 2018, 08:15

Maybe I'm searching for the wrong thing but I didn't expect it to be so difficult to track down a "Y" piece to split the dust extraction between two ports on a tablesaw (DeWalt DW745 to be precise).

I've found one from £estool but really, really do not want to pay that much for one!
DeWalt sell a three way manifold, with many accessories I don't believe I need (and therefore would prefer not to pay for).

Any suggestions welcome!

I assume you are looking to connect the port on top of the blade cover with the port on the back? I think the best option is DIY with plumbing fittings and old vacuum cleaner accessories. I have never bothered to try extract from above my saw, kity 419. I know others have.

+1
If you sort out the extraction from below which basically means blocking up SOME of the unintended air inlets to the cabinet aiming to balance the area of the openings to the area of the dust collection port, then there is minimal advantage to adding extraction from above.

When the lower extraction is correctly balance you should be able to feel distinct suction around the blade insert and illustrate this by throwing a pinch of sawdust towards the (stationary!) blade.
Usually the worst culprit for air leaks is the quadrant slot caused by the blade tilt mechanism. I use bristle draught excluder to semi seal this.

Other gaps between the cabinet and the underside of the table have bits of old fibreglass insulation stuffed in them to tune the suction performance.

I do extract from the crown guard as well as from the saw itself. I have a wooden enclosure under the saw cabinet and extract from that. The crown guard extract hose is ported into the same wooden enclosure so the one main extraction does both. No Tee pieces needed.

I was reaching a similar conclusion re using waste pipe... You'd think DeWalt would spot a gap in the market to sell something that connects the two ports... I was in two minds about extracting from the top until I used the saw for the first time and it efficiently ejected a ton of dust from the port - I was impressed to say the least!

The impression that you perhaps should have been left with is that the suction from below is inadequate to extract the sawdust from the blade gullets. :D

Someone around here, I forget who, made a very nifty blade guard from perspex with extraction port.

Come forward that man.

Although I can extract from the main chamber, I find that I can get away with just extracting from the crown guard.
Then every so often I open up the base and give it a good clean with the vac.
