planer / thicknesser recommendations

Here's the place to talk about all your table saws, bandsaws, routers and dust extractors. In fact anything that makes noise and uses electrickery.

planer / thicknesser recommendations

Postby greeno » 18 Sep 2020, 13:12

my wood butchery has got to the level where I think I need a planer thicknesser in my life.

Budget is 300£.

If prefer to go new as I don't know enough to go second hand.

It's more butchery than fine wood working.

I've looked at reviews and options online.

First I initially concluded standalone thicknesser rather than a combined machine. Budget then led me to the triton or the axminster hobby job. However the latter seems to have just gone up in price.

Anyone have any thoughts/ comments?

Facebook Marketplace can find some really good value for money secondhand machines, especially if you can find some old chap upgrading.

E.G a nearly new Metabo for £400 used only for a site job and now surplus as they have a large one in the workshop.

I've just been scanning ebay to try and value my planer thicknesser. A Metabo HC260. It's a decent machine but doesn't like stupidly hard wood such as the flooring I just bought. Fine with Oak etc. Just fitted new blades.

Very hard to work out what it might sell for. best guess so far is £300/350 but there is a big variation in sold prices so not sure.

I'm NE of London near the end of the M11 but I've no idea where you are so don't know if it would interest you anyway?

Hi Robert,

I might be interested. I'm just outside Cambridge so you're only an hour down the road.

What kind of life has it had?

Quite an easy one I'd guess. It is about 12 years old but the blades I've just fitted are only the 3rd set it has had from new. (you can get away with some resharpening hence extended the life but still relatively light use)

I'll take some pictures and post a for sale thread tomorrow.
