Plastic blast-gates

Here's the place to talk about all your table saws, bandsaws, routers and dust extractors. In fact anything that makes noise and uses electrickery.

Plastic blast-gates

Postby tracerman » 30 Sep 2014, 23:16

Having today sorted out some shortcomings with my dust extraction system , during which I happened upon a new local souce ( see www.Lindab.co.uk ) in Chandlers Ford , and have swopped a rubber 6" to 4" reducer for a galvanized metal one , I am now considering some proper blast-gates to replace the lemonade bottles shoved up my 4" tubes . Does anyone have an opinion about the plastic ones from Ax ? they look ok in the website and seem quite cheap .

They are the ones I use. Some have come unglued. Some there is too little friction in the slide gate on some and it gets sucked shut. You need to make sure that the slide gate is at the bottom otherwise the internal groove that it slides into to seal shut gets blocked with sawdust.

Other than that, they're OK !

Why wouldn't a handyman with a workshop full of kit make blast gates himself out of 3 bits of ply?

How would you connect them to the pipes/hose?

Ah, that wouldn't work for me as I have two wandering hoses. Presumably you must use (a) very thick ply and (b) glue the hoses in?

There's a few ways to make them tbh. I can find some links when I get home.

Plastic axi gates aint great in my experience. There metal ones aint the best either but with a little messing do a good job. I use the metal ones but if I needed more I would look elsewhere.

I made all my 4" and 6" blast gates. To make it easier to fix any pipe or hose I doubled up the board I used, To cut the hole I just used a jigsaw or did them on the lathe. The important bit is to use something that will slide easily as the gate. Perspex works well. I went round and siliconed the pipes and hose to stop leaks

Have you had to glue your home made blast gates to the pipe?
One of the reasons I thought the Axi plastic ones were a good idea is that they have a large conical area that should provide a good friction fit but still allow for disassembly to allow easy repositioning.
As I have not put my system together yet this is all supposition.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Not so much glue but made the holes a snug fit for the ducting and then a line of sealant. I recently had a big change around of machines and all the ducting came apart easily. Everythings all plummed in to nearly all machines.
