Thread Chasing

Postby Woodbloke » 19 Feb 2020, 15:52

Went over to see my mate (I do have a few :D) Andy Pickard yesterday near Trowbridge who introduced me to the delights of thread chasing :eusa-whistle: Apparently it's a bit like riding a bike, so once the 'trick' has been learnt, it then becomes dead easy; hopefully :D He's been making a few boxes recently in African Blackwood with a turned thread for the lid and the process intrigued me, so I wanted to learn how to do it.
The 'male' thread is relatively easy but it's the internal 'female' thread that's hard as you need an extra tool rest to support the cutter.
The cost of these chasers at Ax and elsewhere is eyewatering (around £74) but he let me have a couple of 11tpi unhandled cutters at 'mate's rates', just need to get hold of one of these thingies now - Rob

Rob, You might pick up chasers more cheaply from dealer in used engineering tools. These days they are very rarely used in metal working. You will need to make some sort of handle for wood turning bit like a long file handle.

Bob

PS stay away from the "Coventry die box" style chasers. They are not what you need and they dont come in internal type AFAIK.

The one's I bought off Andy were genuine, pretty old (guess WW2 vintage) chasers meant for wood and all I need to do now is to turn some handles for them - Rob

I have a set of hand threaders and was lucky to pick up one of those thingies as you call them cost me £5 from a club member who was giving up.
I have had a quick practice but need to get and do some more once I can get back to the workshop as I am at present rebuilding one of my wood stores that got damaged in the high winds see HERE

I got my chasers from Ed at Olivers woodturning

I’ve a few sets but prefer the Ashley Iles unichaser https://www.ashleyilestoolstore.co.uk/t ... asing-tool

One tool does both male & female threads which not only makes it cheaper but I also found I don’t need the additional rest to use it

£99 and you get perfect fitting threads every time provided the wood is good enough.
