How do you remove dust from turnings prior to finish?

The place to find and post anything related to the world of spinning wood at ridiculously high speeds!

How do you remove dust from turnings prior to finish?

Postby Andyp » 27 May 2015, 19:03

I usually use a clean rag and white spirit which tends to bring out the grain as well. Are there alternative methods that do not include compressed air?
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Once all the dust has settled after cleaning up, as the last thing you want to do is kick up more when applying the finish. I use a soft brush and tack cloths.

I suppose my cloth with white spirit could be called a tack cloth. Sometimes though it seems to darken the wood which is not always desirable.

I use the purpose made tack clothes which don't darken the wood. Mine came from Terry at Chestnut products

I guess they have a natural shelf life after which they are no longer tacky?

Yes they do once they are opened. How long exactly I could not say as I don't use them on a daily basis so do not keep track of how long the last. all I can say is when you have used it put it back into the bag to prevent any dust and dirt from settling on it when not in use.
Another thing that you may try is a soft vacuum brush on the vac, if that makes sense

I've vacuumed as well but the brush is a bit harsh.

use a soft paint brush with the shop vacuum close to it, works quite well, I use this to clear the dust out of computer fans, heatsinks and cases.

Dave
My tool kit is almost complete, only a few more to get.
