Turned Box

Postby Dalboy » 29 May 2015, 20:43

I have just completed this turned box it measures 7" long X 3 1/4" wide and stands 7 3/4" tall. The main body is turned from Ash, the box is Sapele and the finial is holly stained black.

 Something that I am not about to try. Some of those images look really scary.

Excellent result though.

Until I saw your pics I'd assumed you had used a saw - that looks dangerous!
Skilful work.

Thanks guys.

when I first saw pictures like mine I thought the same thing but the more I turned the more adventurous I became, turning a solid bowl can be just as dangerous if it has a hidden split or fault in it.
I worked from the hole to the base leaving it a little on the thick size and then to get it to the final size again I work from the hole round to the base.
A gentle touch does help but one advantage over a solid hollow form is that you can see how thick the walls are.
Whenever I turn I use full face protection and keep fingers and any other body parts clear of the piece, after all you would not want to put your finger into a cooling fan on a car when it is running for example.

I started with something easier when I turned these pieces.

Amazing skills :eusa-clap: but I'm afraid the pieces don't appeal at all to my taste.

Good job we are all different eh?

Flip flops and a loose fitting vest, that's what you're supposed to wear when turning isn't it… :eusa-whistle:

Sorry for late reply as I have just got back from a very long weekend away Thursday until last night.

Thanks for all the compliments.

If you want to do something like this then keep it simple start with a square bowl and get use to the corners flying around. I always wear full face protection and keep the fingers behind the tool rest. Because you are going from solid to fresh air keep the cuts light and don't try and force the tool into the work so sharp tools help.

Never had any interest in turning, but just maybe Dalboy, you could convince me. Like Bob, not my cup of tea stylistically, but you are blinking good at this turning lark sir, my hat is duly off to you! :eusa-clap:
