Goblet Competition Piece #2

Postby Andyp » 27 Sep 2015, 13:07

I too use the competition on UKW to provide a bit of incentive to try things out.
I could have made something along the lines of Derek's but I decided on the less is more approach ;)

My entry is an ash goblet, 7.5" high, diam 2". Stem 3/8ths
At least I think it is ash, here is the is the log.

Roughing gouge to start, bowl gouge and scraper used to hollow out the bowl. Spindle gouge and skew. Sanded to 420 grit and finished with sanding sealer and carnauba wax.
I followed Keith Rowley's instruction on a couple of test goblets in pine. This is the first one I have done in hardwood and I am very pleased that it came out exactly as planned.

I find taking pictures that truly show the grain pattern and finish almost as hard as the turning. Thanks to Derek (Dalboy) for a few tips that I think have helped.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Andy, I think this looks great. My personal aesthetic preference is very much "less is more", so the purity of design of a piece like this is something that very much appeals. :eusa-clap:

Terry you are too kind, thanks. My opening remark was very much tongue in cheek but i will try and follow Derek's lead and try something a little more challenging next time.

Looks really nice Andy - but I've been told they tend to split on final drying if the heart of the log is in there ?
Cheers !

Have you had much time to use your lathe much yet. or is all you spare time taken up with the renovation project?

Not a lot Andy. As you say, renovation project, but also volunteer activities : this year I've set up an interactive website for the town in cooperation with the Mairie, organised a photo exhibition and run two 200 stall vide greniers.

All done now, so hope to get some lathe time during the winter.
Cheers !
