Pot Pourri Bowls, Yew

Pot Pourri Bowls, Yew

Postby Andyp » 24 Apr 2016, 15:34

When I offered to make space in Rob's workshop by removing his bandsaw I did not expect to be given some very nice pieces of seasoned yew to play with.

I do so hope that I have done the wood justice. Yew is just gorgeous to look at and to turn. Pot lids from Axminster. Finished with carnuba wax.

Stunning! Very nice indeed. 8-)

I do like yew, just a bit of a swine to work with.
In my previous life, I was a tree.

Thanks Dave, the colour and grain in the wood detract the eye from my shortcomings.

Thanks Paul, why is it as swine to work with? On the lathe I found it to be very easy to work with.

It's probably okay on a lathe with sharp gouges, but it can be a bit unpredictable when working with hand tools.

I collected half a car load of the stuff a couple of years ago when I spotted a bloke at the side of the road near where we use to live, attempting valiantly to burn the whole tree  that had come down in a storm. He'd approached local turners, cabinet makers etc who weren't interested so I filled up the boot a couple of times and brought it home. I've still got a few big chunks left for when I get the urge to do something on the dark side but I'm also on the look out for other interesting woody bits as well - Rob
