Ash box

Postby Doug » 29 Aug 2016, 18:18

I don't get much leisure time at the lathe these days but this afternoon I got the chance to play, this box is made from Ash the valleys between the coves have been burnt & the finial is turned from a scrap of Blackwood.

Very 'ansome indeed chap. 8-)

I've done very little lathe work.
In my previous life, I was a tree.

Oh I like that very much. I assume you must have cut those valleys before burning them, how? And how do you do your burning. I took some braided copper wire and wrapped each end around a small block which I hold against the piece. I find it a simple but very effective method of decoration.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

Nice job Doug like this one. The burnt lines help to show the beads, nice shape and the finial not to big or small for the box

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated.

I cut the beads with an Ashley Iles cove tool & did the burn lines with a piece of Formica as I find this the safest way

When I saw the thread title and being in 'fire' mode I thought it was going to be something to stick under the grate!!

But now I see that the 'ash' is supposed to be inside it. :eusa-whistle:
