Spalted Beech Bowl

Started the day making a vase but it split, so I found this blank at the back of the wood store which was nice and dry. Very pleased with the spalting on this one so kept the shape simple to let it show. 6 3/4" X 2"

Beautiful. Tell me, and forgive my ignorance, but spalting is it rot or desease or what, that changes the colour of the timber? I love the simple shape, looks lovely. :eusa-clap:

Spalting is the process of the tree wood rotting the lines are fungus, as well as the other areas different fungi cause different shades in the wood. The very light wood is the softest on this piece if it was left in a cool damp place it would have rotted away in no time, this piece I managed to just catch at the right time

I like a bit of spalting - the beech tree my daughter had to have cut down and logged has all spalted.
