I imagine that the pyrography is not freehand. Are you transferring an image onto the bowl before you start burning?

Sorry Andy missed your post. I used graphite paper to transfer the pattern I still need a lot of practice, If it is on a flat surface I use a laser printer I got off of free cycle and iron it on.
