Pens

The 3 Celtic knot pens are apple. The horizontal one is lignum vitae.

I much prefer the thinner knots, which I could only achieve thanks to a sample pack of veneers I have being the exact same kerf width as my champion mitre saw.

The lignum vitae bowling green bowls that I have are full of splits, which is quite normal but it was a challenge to cut 2 pieces split free.

I also treated myself to a photo tent which I hope will help me take some better pictures.

Nice pens :-)

handy tip for the tent .. you can get a remote flash adapter quite cheap on ebay.
when the flash on your phone or camera fires, the remote triggers too and will fill the tent with light, so no (or less) shadows

Good job Andy. I too also like the thinner ones. I think the time and effort you put is has produced these lovely pens :eusa-clap:

I've had a quick look but I've no idea what I am looking at. If you have a mo ould you post a link.

That shot was taking with just one light from above with a small digital camera, no flash.

Thanks Derek. 5 days for those Celtic knot pens. Keeping the wood perfectly square while each of those cuts are made and then glued up is a bit of a challenge.

Try not cutting all the way through and the slide the glued piece in this will help to keep the blank in line, once dry clean off the excess veneer before doing the next one.

That's is exactly what I do Derek. I also have a clamping jig that clamps in two directions, end and side, but I am think of adding a top clamp as well.

this sort of thing.
it should work with any old film camera flash you can pick up for pence at car boot sales etc.
On that note .. never use a flash from a film camera on a new/modern digital camera.

oh, and just to make clear, this is a trigger only .. you still need a cheap flash gun to go with it :-)

I'm a bit puzzled by "never use a flash from a film camera etc"
I've got an old sigma flash gun - won't that work?

The old camera flash triggers were mechanical .. so what the flash did at the camera connection didn't matter. So a lot of them generate quite high voltages to make the "flash"

New cameras use electrickery to trigger the flash, so the flash unit needs to behave and not put out too much voltage back to the camera.

I'd risk a cheap £4 ebay trigger with an old flash, but not my £1500 camera !

a very quick google came up with this.
The question was asked the other way round, but the answer seems to explain the differences

when I get a sec, and IF I can still get in my darkroom, I'll see if I can find a few and show the setup.
