Yin Yang Plate, cherry and chestnut

Postby Andyp » 07 Apr 2017, 11:53

I am not entirely happy with this but as I have not posted anything for a while so I thought I would share. It ended up 1" smaller that intended  and about and half as thick. 9"diam and 1" high.

Choice of timber has not helped the intended affect of the eyes but it was all I had large enough at the time.
I also had problems drilling the holes hence the unsightly glue lines. On the plus side working with the templates was a doddle.

Only taken me 3 weeks!.

I must acknowledge Mike Urquhart from whom I purchased the templates. I tried without success to make make my own.

Cool! Would look really good using something like Sycamore and ABW…

Well done Andy, you can be very proud of your work, it looks great. Yes I suppose a more contrasting wood would have made it have more contrast, but yours still looks perfectly ok. I had the same problem with the 2 small disks, I now just use a forstner bit to make the holes and then turn the disks on the lathe with a very small taper and make them slightly taller than the depth of the hole, so it is being wedged into the hole. Thank you for the acknowledgment it is very much appreciated. Keep in touch with your projects, and good luck with your next Yin & Yang.

Cheers

The pieces fit together a treat and I can see why you would need a template to achieve that. Maybe next time as already stated more of a contrast with the timbers.

Well you have done more than me Andy as I have not been in the workshop for just over a month due to being laid up but now spending 10 to 20 minutes in there now hoping to increase that.

To be honest Mark cherry and chestnut would have been ok had I not been left with so much figured grain. I have some cherry and sycamore waiting for me in the UK for the next ones.

Thanks Mark. The problem with the eyes was too fold. 1) holding the plate steady while resting on the stub tenon and 2) either the holes shrunk or the discs grew between me taking them off the lathe and gluing them - in all of 5 mins.

Sorry to hear that Derek. With kids not well ( and me) and the pressures that this time of year always brings in the garden I have struggled but I do have another couple of bits in various states of preparation.

Yebbut.....

......at no stage did you ask me to draw it for you. I could have sent you PDF's to print and stick on, at full size, which would have solved the problem without buying a template. Seconds of a job, literally.

Yebbut that was how naively I first approached the problem. I challenge you to stick your two PDFs of the yin yang curve on 2" thick timber, cut around them, adjust as necessary then stick them together with no gaps whatsoever.

Thanks, although credit must go to the quality of the templates. Despite Mike's assertions I would wager it is not possible to fabricate and glue those two halves together without starting with a perfectly matched template.

That looks very nice Andy.

There are a couple pics on the web using the same design for T-light candles, 2 separate pieces.

The accuracy of the 'join' or gap is not that serious.

Thanks Phil. I has seen those two piece items but where is the challenge in that. :)

True, BUT, they can always be regarded as "trial" pieces just to keep your eye in for the cutting.

If you mess up any blanks, recovery procedure is matching candle holders. 8-)

I'll take your wonga 'cos you'd loose  It's quite easy to make a perfectly matched pair of shapes if you use router bushes and a 6mm cutter:

They fit exactly. A 'how to' coming up shortly on your favourite website :D

What you have there Rob are not two identical pieces glued together so tightly that I had the confidence to fling them around the lathe at 1000pm. I see one or two gaps in yours as well at 11 o'clock and just past 9. :)

When you've made a plate like mine I'll be happy to offer them up for judging here ;)

The walnut is for something else that will be displayed on you second favourite website soon. :D

Well spotted, that's the dreaded router wobble  'cos I was in a rush. The method is foolproof though and works - Rob

I have very rarely used a router hand held (only the small trend and never the big triton) for just that reason. Using a template on the table can even be done in a rush and on 2" thick timber.

Challenge still stands. I'd love to see you use that method to produce the yin yang effect on a bowl/platter.
