Work Lamp

Postby Woodster » 12 May 2017, 17:52

I'm thinking about getting one of these two for use on my Lathe:

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/ligh ... -00315651/

Which one to go for though? I think some folks have glued magnets on the underside of the flat based one so it clips to the lathe bed. Any thoughts?

Mod edit: Links sorted. For some reason when you copied and pasted the url the ö character cased a malfunction

Both links seem to go to pages that they say they are working on

Hhm, not sure what's gone wrong there. The link was ok. Anyway, it's the Jansjo LED work lamp, one with a plain base the other with a clamp.

I should add that I already have another LED work light with a magnetic base but the light quality is pants!

In my experience with lamps with clamps is the clamp always fails rendering the thing useless. I would go for the base version and use a workshop spring clamp to hold in place.

I've have a couple of the Ikea LED ones that have clamps and are still going strong after several years. I do clamp them to a bit of wood that acts as a support tough. The beam is quite narrow but ok for use on my Bandsaw and metal working lathes aimed at the cutting action.

Your link is still not working.

Strange, all looks good here. Perhaps a refresh and clear cache might solve it for you Rod.

I have. The Jansjo USB light, the light output is pretty poor, it just gives a glow over a keyboard

Those lamps look nice, clamping would be the better option. The links work.

I have some old flexible lamps that I want to convert to LED, one of them (long) for the lathe.

The lamp fitted to the lathe is certainly not worth the time, effort and money. Does not shine on the face where you are working.

Mods, thanks for fixing the links. ;)

I think I'll be getting the lamp with the base as the neck is longer.

I have the one with the base - I think you might have seen it last time you visited?

It comes with a non-magnetic (pot metal?) weight that fits inside the base. I turned a wood replacement and screwed some rare-earth magnets to it. It sticks like glue to the lathe now, wherever I want to site it. It has a long and very flexible neck and decent illumination. I use it all the time, it's really useful.
