I've several tools not dissimilar to this simply made from Ashley Iles tool steel, they are very easy & inexpensive to make.
If you can sharpen a tool like that you can grind one from round bar, why pay for such a simple tool

You can buy it from them Andy, I usually pick a few blanks of differing sizes when I see them at a show, they usually range between £5-£10 depending on size, about a 1/3 of my turning tools have been made from their HSS blanks.

The other thing I like about Ashley Iles is they sell most of their turning tools unhandled which I like not only as it is cheaper but I can turn a handle to suit my grip.

I've been trying to get a length of 1/4" HSS but I can't find any long enough. 4" bits are common enough but 8" or more seems pretty rare. I did find one supplier on eBay but it was unhardened which is no good as HSS really needs to be hardened professionally. Ashley Iles is a likely source but only if you can pick some up at one of the shows. If I go to the Yandles show later in the year I'll try and get some.
