I have a chunk of cherry ..... is it worth using? ( suppose a picture would help.) Did think about finding somewhere to cut it into nice bits but gave up as no one wanted to cut it.

Difficult to answer with out seeing it but normally depending on the wood I would cut into blanks and seal my other choice is to leave it as big as possible and cut as needed.
The only problem with fruit woods is that they can split very soon after cutting down. In this case I would possibly cut into blanks and rough turn which would allow it to move rather than split.
Again I state as I did at the beginning photo's would help
