The clock's ticking to Christmas #2

Postby Andyp » 04 Dec 2017, 12:29

Actually finished something!

Spalted beech. Nothing complicated just a bit of a faff getting the depth right for the mechanism to poke through.
I might have to replace the mechanism as it doesn't tick. This might be a godsend to some but I have a daughter who finds the ticking of a clock comforting.

I hope to get the next one done in under 10 days.

Thanks all, it is the grain or spalting that makes it look good, there is little skill involved. The next one will be a bit more of a challenge.

Do you have to soak the wood in anything to stop the spalting falling to bits as you turn it ?

Er Dunno. Never gave it a thought. Should I have done? I always assumed that spalting only occurred while the wood was wet. Once it has dried out the spalting stops.

As you may already know spalting is the first steps of the wood starting to rot if caught at the correct time you will get the effect that Andy has in the clock. As Andy said once dried the wood will not continue to rot but having said that sometimes when it has been dried some of the wood may be a little punky which can be stabilised using either sander sealer or even ca glue. There is also a point that it just goes to far and needs a wood burner ;)

Thanks Derek,
I do seal all turnings with sanding sealer prior to finishing.

I mean use the sealer to stabilise while turning to help harden the piece if the wood is a little soft. I know you would put something on for the finish

Interesting Derek. How often would you need to apply the sealer while turning? Surely it would harden but scrape off in no time.

I made this years ago, it had “gone over” a bit too far but managed to turn it using Ca glue to stabilise it.

Turn the piece close to shape first then start to stabilise this may need to be done every other cut until the final finish is achieved I use a thinned sealer for the job which soaks in a little more. Try to get a smoother finish as possible with the tools on the last cuts so as not to require much sanding as this can also wear away the softer sections and leave the bowl or whatever it is your turning with undulations on the surface don't ask I have been there.
Then once completed apply finish as normal but I would avoid oils as any sealer that was applied to stabilise may effect the oil penetration. I have heard people using oil to stabilise but you will need to wait for it to fully dry which knowing many turners they don't like to wait that long.

Dave, the kids choose the blanks on a visit to Stiles and Bates last month.

Hopefully here is the clock. I will delete the earlier ones just as soon as Mark has had a chance to see what went wrong.

On the first one the black hands worked well with the black spalty bits.
I like the timber on the second one, the dots look great but for some reason the hands don't seem to match with the rest of it. Maybe a straight silver hand would marry up with the rest of it a little more ?
