The wood collection begins

Postby Dalboy » 05 Dec 2017, 20:08

Well this is the first of my latest acquisition of wood to boost the pile.

The wife came in two weeks ago telling me there is a notice up on a lamp post less than 100feet around the corner stating that the road will be closed during the day for 2 weeks while trees are cut down. Anyway Monday the workmen started lopping the tops and getting all of the smaller pieces off ready for the trucks to be cut down.
A gentle walk around the corner and a chat to the man in charge and the outcome was that today the first of many pieces ended up in my garden.
This is Ash and there is Oak and Field maple to follow. So I will add photo's as it arrives.
Here is today's small pieces as this is off one tree with the main trunk still to be felled.
As you can see I have made a start on preparing them since the photo the ends have been sealed except the larger lump in the car which is now sitting on the patio ready for the chain saw.

First two pics. These two pieces hopefully show the nice piece of flame and could make a very interesing couple of bowls

Third pic. The little piece bottom left is 9" square to give an idea of size

Forth pic. A straight piece of grain

Last two pics. The lump still to be carved up the small branch coming off of the main trunk is about 9" diameter. So the rest of the trunk below this will give some nice sized bowls or hollow forms

Nice haul Derek, well done. You must gave a lot of space to store it all.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Today I need to chop the last big piece and seal that as I think there is another lump coming down today.

Andyp wrote:Nice haul Derek, well done. You must gave a lot of space to store it all.

I have a lean to which is bursting at the seams as it is not over large but also have a shed up the garden which needs a little re-arranging of the wood storage to make room for them. I am also thinking of making another small lean to beside the first one. But until then will keep them covered over the top leaving the sides exposed to allow air movement

Depending on how thick I cut them on average 1 inch per year so a 3inch thick will take three years. I will however rough turn and this will reduce the drying time as I normally rough turn to about 1inch thickness and seal the outside only

New housing being built personally the only trees that need to be taken down would be in a couple of places to allow road access to it but I think they are taking down 300 to 400 feet long line of them. I think it is a shame in that respect. Mind you from the ones that they took down in the beginning of the year some did need to come down for safety reasons totally rotten in the middle.

Another day cutting logs. While all around everyone is having snow we have not had any so next best thing make my own this is what I call woodturners snow. The first picture shows how much I have got left to do and the second the wood which has been cut so far. In total there are 48 pieces some as 16"+ across some I may even get more than one blank from. And the last photo is one of the pieces showing the grain

After a very slow start to the day yesterday because of a trip to the hospital for a cardiac appointment, I managed to get some more of logs cut this now has produced 25 more blanks I am now running out of room to store them and I still have more logs to cut as well as being told there is another load coming tomorrow. Now what a shame that you all live so far away

Yippee the last of the logs are now cut down to a manageable size and given a coat of emulsion as a temporary measure. Just managed to get them cut except three small pieces which I had to use an axe on to split down the middle, run out of petrol and as I don't know when the next lot will arrive best way to leave the chainsaw.
Next job will be to cut into rounds where needed and sealed and dated/weighed.
This brings the total to 128 pieces.

Just the normal household stuff it is just a stop gap and I have some part used cans laying around from decorating. I like to give it a heavy coat where possible

Water or oil based? and what do you use as a long term sealer?

It is water based.
For the final seal I use thinned PVA I have found it seals nicely have been using it for ages and uses up all the older bottle I have had for a while. Like most drying you will get failures but on the whole I seem to get very few that split.
Starting tomorrow I will be rounding some off as I need to reduce the storage area that a piece takes up before doing this. I also will be stacking them in blank size(Diameter) and wood type. Each will be marked with weight and date.

Thanks Derek.

I might get some logs from a tree eldest son wants to take down. Need to ID it first.

How do you round off? Bandsaw?

I used to seal mine with melted candle wax, it’s a bit messy though but provides a good seal. I bought a cheapo small electric ring and a large bag of wax beads and used an old large saucepan.

I used wax many years ago. Once visited a factory where blocks of wax was used in a water proofing process and scrounged a couple of offcut blocks. Travelling by plane limits one to what can be broght back home.

At last finished all of the wood that was outside under a tarp so now all sealed under cover and in stick. Started with 128 pieces cut from the logs then once cut into rounds and hollow form blanks gives me a good amount to turn and that is after I gave 18 pieces away this now gives me a total of 102 bowl blanks and without getting on my knees to count the hollow form blanks a rough guess of 40 to 50. Some I will eventually rough turn to speed up drying. I am expecting some losses but with that amount should still give me a good amount.
