Confirmation Pen

Postby Andyp » 02 Jun 2018, 13:28

My twins have been invited to a confirmation by a friend so they asked me if I could make her a pen.

In apple with walnut cross. If I had more time I would have bought a religious themed clip.

Thanks Malc. As religiuos symbols of any kind are banned in French state schools I thought it was subtle enough to be used in class if she so wished.

Quite sad when stuff gets banned, I feel there is a loss of culture somewhere.

Very nice Andy. Nothing like making something for the kids to give you a warm feeling. Half the pleasure of turning is in the giving.

Some very careful gluing to get that to come out, nicely done.

Thanks Dave.
The walnut veneers were carefully machined down from 3 to 1 mm by Rob, the woodbloke, of this parish to match the kerf of my champion mitre saw. The hard part was holding the blank to make the long, with the grain cut, on a 2” pen blank. I had to stick the blank to a piece of scrap to give me something to hold while I made the cut. Not shown on the photos but the cut only goes down half way. Then of course I had to drill the hole peferectly parallel to the walnut insert or the cross would have been off centre on the finished pen. I was chuffed that it came out perfectly.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Thanks Rob,
Pen turning is easy. It is coming up with a design then executing it well that really floats my boat.

Where do you get the bits n'pieces from for pen turning? I see that Ax do a decent range of gear but what do you actually need in the way of mandrels and other odds n'sods? - Rob

Oh err Bob, I have done it but am no expert.

I have bought all my stuff to date from Stiles and Bates and Tuners Retreat

You need a mandrel which holds the blanks while you turn them. You need a drill to make the exact size hole for the pen tubes (barrels) to be inserted, you need a barrel trimmer to trim the blank to the exact same length as the tube, you need some bushes which hold the blank away from the ends of the mandrel so that you have room to move with the gauges and you need some pen kits. To insert the pen bits (twist mechanism, pointed end and cap/clip) into the tubes you can buy a special press, I use a Wolfcraft single handed clamp with nice soft pads.

Derek, Dalboy, knows a lot more about this sort of thing than I.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Unless they’ve come up with something different, when I made pens you had to buy a kit of mandrels, spacers etc for each type of pen. Occasionally some sets worked for more than one style.

For someone starting out I recomend buying bushes for each type of pen you make as they are a guide to the final diameter needed to fit the kit they are designed for.
A mandrel saver is something that I would also recomend as so many starting out get a little over enthusiastic when tightening the tailstock onto the end of the mandrel leading to it being bent which in turn leads to the turned part not having a perfect match to the kit parts.

I now do not use bushes but prefer to turn between centres and measure the blank to the component but this is something further down the line for someone starting out
