Turning Green Blanks & Subsequent Drying?

Postby Woodbloke » 24 May 2019, 17:36

At AndyP's suggestion, what's the best way to safely rough turn (walnut in this case) and dry out green wood so that it doesn't crack during subsequent drying? - Rob

When roughing out make sure you keep it to an even thickness including the bottom. then seal the outside only.
When making the tenon make it slightly oversize as if it warps you can turn it back to fit the jaws of the chuck.
It depends on how large the piece is as to what thickness you will need to turn it to as well as the wood involved some woods warp more than others.
This is no guarantee that the bowl will not split but it does reduce the likely hood of it happening.
I have a lump of walnut that I forgot to rough out and it has split but I will be turning it and making a feature from it
