Ornamental cherry which once stood in my garden. Turned from the trunk which is only 6" diameter as it was only a young tree. Finished with Acrylic sander sealer and an Acrylic gloss lacquer. Measures 6 1/2" X 4 1/2" X 3 1/2". Managed to lose the bark amongst the shavings so no chance of sticking it back on.

Currently reading the story of 'Cherry' Ingram, the Englishman who saved Japan's cherry blossoms. Fascinating stuff - Rob

Turned from a small trunk 5" to 6" diameter across the bed and not spindle turned you can see the centre of the tree in the sides

Did you have to reverse chuck it? If so how?

If you mean to remove the foot then yes I did.
When I cut the tenon to turn the inside I made a small dimple in the centre of the tenon this helped later

I fitted a piece of wood in the chuck and shaped it to match the inside of the bowl. I use a piece of router mat between the wood and the bowl to protect the piece.

I put a revolving centre in the tailstock and brought this up and placed it in the dimple I mentioned, Then turned as much of the tenon away and sanded removed from lathe to finish the small amount left from holding it and sanded to blend in with the rest.

Hope that makes sense

I understand but am amazed that without a complete rim it stays put.

The rim does not touch anything the bowl is supported by the jam chuck (the wood piece) inside the bowl and the tailstock is supporting the tenon end. Never had any problems doing it this way.

I guess I just lack the confidence to try that method.
