Salt and Pepper set

Postby Dalboy » 15 Aug 2019, 21:09

I have quite a few bowls balls so I set myself a task of making a salt and pepper set from just one of them. They measure 4 1/4" one way and 5" the other as they are not true circles, by cutting one in half I managed to get each pot from those and now they measure 2 1/4" each. The pots are Lignum Vitae The base is from Oak as is the support for the white sphere which is made from Beech painted, this represents the Jack in the game.

Oh yes I like those a lot. Are those inserts for the salt and pepper? Can you post details?

Yes but have been thinking of making an insert which will not be difficult

Nice set, but that's something I would be concerned about as well - Rob

Derek how did you finish those pots. I am trying to finish LV with carnauba wax but it always ends up very streaky.

Thanks Derek.
Wet sanding! Dunno why I haven't tried that before. probably 'cos it is not in my book. Just read a few articles and seems like a good idea so will have to give it a go.
I don't have Woodwax 22 but I do have an order piling up. ;)

Andy,

I find when using carnauba wax I need to use a lot of friction to heat it to get it smooth, or apply it using a buffing wheel.

I think that I am getting the wax hot enough. Certainly warm/hot to the touch. There is so much natural oil in LV I was wondering if that can have an affect with the wax.
