Recycled Firewood

A friend of mine had a huge cherry tree in his garden that had to go. Root migration damage the tree surgeons just cut it up into logs, for the fire,
having central heating he was pleased to get rid of it.

A rather un-conventional method of turning, but I was pleased with the result.

That looks very good, like the bark at the base.

Do you find that the bark tends to come off later on?

Cheers

That does look nice. I too am interested on how one stops the bark from falling off.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Hi Phil nd Andyp

In the early 70s I prior to giving turning a break, I picked up a chunk of oak burl with plenty of bark on and turned a bowl for a friend. Having contacted him recently I am assured all is still intact much to his wifes disgust as its a dust catcher :eusa-clap:
So on that basis any well seasoned hard wood should hopefully remain intact.

I like to see inclusions and bark on pieces. Well turned and finished.

A note on bark if in doubt after applying a sealer just run some CA along the bark edge sometimes help keeping it on place more so if it has started to part company

Hi Dalboy
Yep. Thankyou, I always have a small bottle of CA on tap, oh and pack of rubber gloves
With regards to the bark side of things and retention, you might like to look at (Walnut bowl dried in the microwave - on YouTube Carl does a pretty good talk on all his entries)

I downloaded that video and look at it later.

Turned some mushrooms from green wet stock years ago leaving the bark on the edges. Gave them all away except for a few 'rejects'. The bark seems to be holding so far.

Cheers
