New toy ……………… destroying wood

Postby Phil » 24 Feb 2015, 13:02

So what have we here? A nice big box on the back of my bakkie, wonder what it can be?

Image

A very good afternoon for being indoors. Nice big thunderstorm passing through, definitely no work in the garden.

Image

Looks like we had about 15mm of rain. Just enough to keep the ground damp and grass growing.
We will have all the birds descending on the garden later to catch the flying ants.

Ok, lets get back to the box. Hmmm, well sealed with staples and tape.

Get a Stanley knife from the workshop to cut the tape.

Back up to the workshop to get pliers and screwdriver for the staples.
(Why back up to the workshop? It’s on a level about 1m higher than the garage)

Cut off the straps around the box. The tape is cut off and the staples removed. Open the box panels.

Image

Looks like some interesting bits and pieces, all bright and shiny new.

Lift the tray out to see what’s below.

Image

Funny looking contraption, with a light on the top.

Let’s have a look at the label on the box to see what it is …………….

Image

It is not a JET engine but a JET JWL1220! Whoopee a new lathe.

This weighs in at 45KG, a bit heavy for my little arms to lift out the box. So, tip the box over on its side and pull it out, then tip the machine upright.
Take off the tailstock and banjo and get some weight off it.

Image

The temporary spot for it is on the workshop floor where it drops down to the garage. Now to get it off the tailgate and move it.

I ate 5 Kgs of spinach, drank 10 litres of Poweraid, then gripped the two handles sticking out on the side and did a sideways shuffle between the 2 cars without bumping them to the workshop floor.

Image

Assembled and ready to go.

My sharpening stone bracket needed adjustment to fit the new bed which is a lot narrower than the old lathe.

Image

Now to dig out some stock and fire it up.

Thank you for reading and bearing with my rambles …………..

Cheers
Phil

Looks good - does it come with a stand or are you going to build a base for it?

Rod, I did not buy the stand and decided to build one from all the timber lying around in the workshop.

There will be a post in another section looking for ideas and help.

Looking at May/June.

According to developers transfer will be in June.
DO NOT HOLD YOUR BREATH on that one.

I am ready to move, just need to sort out a base for the JET.

I modified one of those a few years back to add a three phase motor and an inverter to give variable speed.

It involved making a new pulley to suit the motor

Image

Here is is ready for collection with Forward, off, Reverse switch on the left and a variable speed knob on the right.

Image

I've never heard back from the chap so I assume it is still working well for him.

I always thought that it was a nice little lathe and very solidly built. I think you can get a bed extension for it too if you need to do longer work. Some recent Jet machines have been cheapened and have a few weaknesses but this hails from the days when all they designs were good.

I hope you have as much fun with your Jet as I have had from mine. They are nice machines and seem to run very smoothly. Time to make some shavings

Right, let’s see how the lathe shapes up.

A small piece of Jacaranda ready to be destroyed. Not sure what I actually want to make.

Image

After a lot of mess trying to get it round, I ended up with this. Turned at the lowest speed.

Image

The old lathe would have rounded the piece in a couple of minutes with brute force and slightly higher speed.

Impressions –
nice and quiet
smooth turning
the light is a nice feature
a bit light weight in the pants
a bit of a learning curve for me (big!)
the two tool rests probably weigh less than half of the small one on the old lathe
changing the belt to a new speed is easy and fast

Conclusion – forget about the old lathe and get the feel of the JET

Ok, so to finish off this piece I decided to make a small vase. I left the bark on and just sanded the top with some fine paper.

Then drilled a 20mm hole 65mm deep for the glass tube to fit in.

Image

The 20mm forstner on the final drilling bit into the hole and gave me two small cracks on the edge.
There is also some breakout on the edge near the bark, will see what can be done.

Image

Not too shabby, BUT I have turned much better stuff in the past.

Cheers
