Blue steaks from abrasive backing

The place to find and post anything related to the world of spinning wood at ridiculously high speeds!

Blue steaks from abrasive backing

Postby Andyp » 21 Mar 2015, 20:29

Why am I getting blue streaks on my turnings? I have a chestnut bowl on the lathe at the moment and have been using the blue Hermes abrasive? I guess I am either applying too much pressure? Too higher speed? Whatever I am doing wrong it is a pita to get rid of.

Tried to take a picture but with the iPod they did not show up
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Is it still a bit wet and the dye's coming off the abrasive?

I don't see how it can be wet Mark I have had the rolls of abrasive for well over a year and there is no damp in the workshop. Unless it is moisture from my own hands, sweat perhaps?

A log from a wood pile even after 2 years still is not fully dry especially if it is quite thick. If you are having this problem with that brand of paper then I personally would change it.

Here is the piece on the lathe a couple of days before I started sanding.

Although I have no way of testing the moisture content of the log which was already split and had spent a year outdoors and probably 10 months undercover, it certainly seems very dry.
