Occasional Table (FINISHED) And not an occasional table

Occasional Table (FINISHED) And not an occasional table

Postby Pinch » 15 Aug 2017, 19:05

G'day chaps. 8-)

This little project is for the home.

Mrs P has mentioned a small table for the conservatory a few times now, and as the maple for my next project hasn't yet arrived, I thought I'd better get on with some paperwork - NOT!

Instead, I decided to investigate an old table top I replaced for a client a few months ago. I was going to sell it, but like all these things, it's been sitting around the workshop for a while. Anyway, I started to dismantle it yesterday (in amongst doing other things), and it looks like it could be teak or possibly Indian rosewood. I then started to think about a design for the new occasional table. After preparing some of the old teak (maybe) and some off-cut oak, I now had the stock for this cool little design in my head.

First up, here's the old table top - very very heavy.
Image

After chopping it about a bit (still a fair bit left) and sorting out some oak, I have organised all the bits on the bench for the new table.
Image

Image

I haven't prepared a drawing as the design is in my head, so there's no drawing to show. It's a simple design and this little table is going to be a beauty! I'm quite excited about it.

After preparing the timber by hand, I've started to mark out some of the work. Here's a little teaser...

I'm going to try and work on this with the maple job, so hopefully, it should be finished before Christmas!

Report back soon.

It better be something rather nice, Mr P, 'coz that old top looked quite attractive the way it was. I might have been tempted to give it a wipe over with a waxy rag and make a new undercarriage for it. There is a reason, though, that you're a pro, and I'm just some guy on the internet...... :)

Yes, I hope so too! I just hope Mrs P likes what I'm making for her - there's always ebay I suppose.

Yep, I know what you mean and I was torn between making an undercarriage, selling it as it was, or dismantling it for the wood. I've kept the middle panel of the top as it is, which could be used for something creative. :eusa-think: Maybe a rustic panel in a table top.

Not at all chap, you're not just some guy on the internet silly billy, you're one very clever dude with a terrific self drive. I wish I had half the energy and drive you have. Anyway, you haven't seen the table yet.

I agree with Mike - I would have used the top as it was! But looks like it's going to good use, by the looks of the pencil markings.

It was very crudely put together and it didn't take much to dismantle. I was thinking about using it as a large wall mounted panel with maybe some photos attached to it, but it's a bit late now. At least none of it has ended up in the waste bay ready for the burner.

A quick update:

I'm really starting to feel Mrs P isn't going to like this table. She likes modern and I'm not that keen. It actually sounds like I'm making it for myself.

I seriously wouldn't be surprised if this table ends up for sale on Fb. :P

After making up the MT's for the front and back frames, I dry assembled and all was good.
Image

Image

Image

Before glue assembly, I shaped the bottom rail's inner face, with final finishing required after glue-up. I shall also shape the underside after glue up, as I need the straight edge for the clamps.
Image

Image

I haven't finished this detail yet.
Image

Here's the back frame in glue-up.
Image

Image

As the shaping work is time consuming, I prepared and glued up the inner panel for the top before getting on with the front frame.
Image

And glued up in clamps.
Image

Back on it tomorrow, unless the maple arrives of course, although I think it's going to be next week now.

I should be catching up with paperwork really. :eusa-dance:

I am up to date with design work and pricing - just waiting to hear back from the prospective clients.

Anyway, I don't feel guilty really  I'm still working.

Good evening my fellow woody chums! :D

I've been staring at this a lot today thinking about going a bit ornate, but then holding back to try and keep it simple. I'm not sure whether to carve out the legs or keep them as they are. Although this little piece isn't modern, I'm thinking if I keep the basic shape as it is with no added detail, it's then on the line of ornate with a modern sort of feel. Or am I trying to convince myself of something which isn't there.

Firstly, the second glue assembly of the table's top.
Image

In clamps.
Image

Here's the rear frame pretty much complete, although the legs still need more work and a finer tune up.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Hmmm do those legs need a bit of detail I ask myself. :eusa-think:
Image

Image

When the two frames are made, they will be joined via a stretcher (either a series of small profiled sticks or a flat board) and side aprons. There will also be a glass shelf and the top of course.
Image

I'm just in two minds whether to go a bit detailed or not. Hmmmm :eusa-think:

Anyway, I'm probably over thinking... after all, it is only a small table for the conservatory. :eusa-drool:

Perhaps I ought stop here, fill in the hole with a steel mesh and sell it as a small fire guard.

Maybe just burn it anyway.

:eusa-think: She's a little devil.

The style is a little difficult to describe but I am sure the completed piece will be a stunner.

Another one of those at right angles with suitable halving joints and whack a top on it, jobs a good un.
Living in the conservatory will likely kill it in a few years anyway unless you re-finish it every couple of years.

Indeed, but since yesterday, the table has been busy in my head and it's now evolving into some type of cabinet and I experienced a eureka moment this afternoon. 8-)

Fortunately, our garden is NW facing so the conservatory doesn't get too hot during the day, but it still gets quite warm I s'ppose.

What's that song again... "Making Plans for Nigel."

Well, I dug Nigel up today from our back garden and I have plans for him.

This is going to be so cool.

This table is growing on me and Nigel now has a role to play.

Table... what table?

Ahhhhhh, you mean the display cabinet - yes indeed.

Meet Nigel...

On your old website I remember an upturned tree root used as a table base but Nigel does not look large enough.
