Display Case / Drinks Cabinet (Complete)

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

I'm using two finishes here... Hence the masking, finishing at 180 grit to allow more finish in and max on the effect/pop (in theory). The UV acrylic on the Sycamore.... And an oil on the grey BE maple as it looks terrible on test with the acrylic, flat and milky.

One for the memory bank: AC lacquers are a bad idea here as the acid content can turn dyed veneers green, so I've learnt from the veneer supplier!Image

Is there anything at all easy about this build? :) Two different finishes! I don't think I've come across that before.

I really don't help myself!...

I've just router out flush, notched the ebony beading to allow the legs in, flush... That was a 'seat of the pants' moment.

I'm also not 100% happy about the finish on the grey... we'll see, it might need to dry out more.

I may need to add a clear wax top finish to give it more depth... Something I don't really do.

Any recommendations on clear wax finishes folks?

I’ve used some homemade beeswax polish on darker woods and white microcrystalline wax on small pale woods.

The microcrystalline is a potential, I've seen this on sale at a popular Devon based ww shop ... is it clear? Does it give a nice sheen?

Post of me thinks it'll be ok, I'm fussing and need to give it more drying time.

Jimmy

My advice is keep taking pictures but don't post any more until you've got over the tricky bits.
If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door.

Ebony finger-pulls made up today, made four as two will go on the next, similar style, but different cabinet.

They are styled on the plan shape of the cabinet... And will be routed into the door frames...oh oh

There's a bit of the silver leaf paint beading in the last pic, came out quite nice... Might be tricky to set as the finish is a little soft.

Also ...an abstract festive reindeer by the little one... Nose and eyes a bit off target ImageImageImageImageImage

I've a strip led light profile (see back a couple of posts) to put in the top of the cabinet to light the display...

Where would you chaps place it? I'm thinking maybe forward rather that dead centre

Oh jesus H...........no.

Actually, you should be safe with this one, with an external pattern and a follower. Those handles are beautiful.

Seriously impressive stuff. As Mike and others have said, you’ve got nerves (or other body parts) of steel!!

Thanks chaps, your are all too kind...I do enjoy sharing, especially after all the excellent help and input I received with the workshop build. It's good motivation too, now that I work on my own. I miss the back and forth discussion I used to get from a shared workshop.

I hope it encourages others to share, and that it provides some extra tips for the memory bank.... I'm always on the look out for new methods. Would be great to see some more WIPs on here - so get bashing folks!

I was going to freestyle route the handle groove in the door stile with a side fence and some stops, but changed tac. I'm going to epoxy them on instead, a lot easier, this meant trimming a bit off the handles (so they're not so proud) and getting some bolts screwed in and then cut down before gluing them in sockets in the stiles.

I also fitted the doors and installed the lighting and glass shelves... No pictures though... As I've been distracted by some strong lower back pain... then tonight some leg numbness... Off to the GP tomorrow

Somehow I'd pictured those handles the other way, lying flat rather than attached on edge.
