Peter Parfitt's Low Profile Caster Carriage

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Peter Parfitt's Low Profile Caster Carriage

Well, since I bought Tracerman's EB P/T, which I hasten to add in my limited experience is the D'sBs, (here it is with the power connected)

I needed to make myself a cabinet to store it's bits in when not being used and then some form of carriage to wheel it around the shop and to stow it away.

So, as Coley had donated some seriously nice dog ends, I decided to have a go at Peter Parfitt's low profile carriage.

Using the P/T for the first time, I was able to get some proper wood, properly face sided, face edged, thicknessed and widthed for the first time ever, accurately!

I first contacted Peter who kindly sent me a copy of his plans. Peter does not charge for any of his plans, but he has written a short story which is an ebook and available from Amazon. It's only 99c and helps to fund his videos.

Anyway, having got the plans, I then adjusted the cutting list to suit my dimensions.

Then I made the first square mortice hole that I've ever done. None of my A Level pieces were this square in 1968!

Then I did some more! You can say what you like about biscuits and dominos, but a mortise and tenon is a mortise and tenon!

Do you mean the Peter Parfitt who was a quick-footed left-hander from Norfolk and whose voice could make a taxi-driver turn his head several streets away?

No.

I mean the renowned woodworker Peter Parfitt who when he was six growing up in Bournemouth, an English coastal town, his father gave him a piece of 2×4, a 4” nail, and an old hammer. With that he fashioned a pretend radio . . . beginning a lifelong passion for woodworking.

After the mortises came the tenons. I used the table saw method for making the tenons.

My jury is still out because I haven't had a chance to make any tenons with the bandsaw yet.

They fitted!

I then made the caster rails with a cutout to take the swivel of the locking lever.

(293.2 KiB)

Then the lower carriage needed a cutout for the lower sections of the locking mechanism.

And to prove my geometry worked!

Then P type insert nuts fitted to take the removable lateral brace.

Lateral brace drilled, counterbored and bolted to the carriage.

Permanent lateral brace fitted, and aligning centres to screw the caster rails to the carriage.

Thanks, Andy. I'm fortunate to be time rich now I'm retired, so the time and effort taken gets me experience on the machines and reminds me of some of what I learnt at school.

Refit the hardware and remove the the short brace to facilitate humping the machine and cabinet onto the carriage.

You also mean the quite arthritic ex-Colonel Peter Parfitt who lives near to me (I've been to his 'shop), late of the Royal Signals - Rob

We've used that make of paint before. It's cracking stuff. Unlike 'Making Love in a Canoe' Farrow & Ball.

If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing. :)

Honestly, though, I don't know that you can overbuild a mobile base. I've taken to derating the ones I have by 50%--the first one, rated at 400 lbs, was crushed by my then table saw that weighed under 300.
