Box

A simple little box for No1 son's birthday next month, a useful container for the storage of squash balls, toe nail clippings and dead spiders :D Elm with some spectacular swirly stuff for the lid and base:

...and also the lining

Construction has been done using secret mitre dovetails, with a mitre also used in the box/lid interface. Mitres cut on the router table. Hardware from Ian Hawthorne and finished with three coats of matt Osmo with Renaissance wax over the top. Chamfer detail on all edges done with a block plane and left from the tool..no sanding. - Rob

Rob, is there any reason why you have gone for such thick walls to the box? They look out of proportion to my eyes, especially in relation to what I guess to be the size of the box.

It's all to do with sums Rog. The thickness of the sides is 15mm, which allowed 12mm for sorting out the secret mitre dovetails and a decent allowance for the mitre itself.
The other aspect is the hinges and chamfer detail. The hinges from Ian H are 8mm wide which then leaves 3.5mm either side and into that 3.5mm on the outside I had to leave enough to get in the chamfer. Were the sides to be made from 12mm stuff, sorting out the hinges would have left 2mm each side which, to be fair, do make life a bit hairy.
As it is, the box 'in the wood' looks fine - Rob

Ah, false image from the photo as to my eyes it looked like 3/4 ". I reckon 15mm is perfect.

Nice Rob

I like the grain matching across the front, very nice. Agree with Roger that it 'looks' in the photo's a little on the chunksome side but as you say it looks fine in the flesh. Either way, it's very nice looking.

I think you need to get back to Specsavers Rob. You've masked the wrong side of the joints Rodney!

I never had any doubt. I remember seeing a box like that Chris Knight made many years ago. Incredible joints. Reminds be of a signature that someone around here used to have, I forget who.

Everything to the east, north and west of the blue tape was glooped very carefully with Osmo except the dovetails. Inside the tape is where the lining was glued eventually. Glooping done with a half inch brush as well.

Take some water this time with the Jura Trim   - Rob

Nice looking wood - that's the problem with secret joints - you cannot see them afterwards and appreciate the effort.
I'd have just mitred them!

Yep, but then how do you get the joint strong enough in the lid (and box) and still have the same external appearance? (i.e. no wafers or jointing showing) The lid is 35mm deep, 10 of which is used for the top panel - Rob
