Bespoke fitted Oak Book & Display Case (FINISHED)

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Looks smashing Pinch...I was going to reward you with a picture of the Wacky Jackie's mannequin ...but whilst on route for a well earned pint last night...she (the mannequin) wasn't there to snap! Perhaps an outfit change?

There was however the village phone box...will that do? Logo a bit out of date...amongst other things :D ...Oh and it say's 'Phonecard only -NO coins'

I'm not a fan of art deco (although I designed the interior of a 90m super-yacht in art deco style some years ago). Cover the top of your piece up, and the rest doesn't say "art deco" at all (which is a positive for me, as I said). I wonder in hindsight if you might have added a motif to the door panels, or done that layered thing to the stiles and drawer fronts which was typical of art deco?

Cheers Mike. Wow, that sounds like it was an interesting project. Yes, I did consider adding more Art Deco features, but the clients wanted to keep it low-key. The door panelling as you mentioned would have been very nice. 8-)

I really enjoy your WIPs, as your work is always so good. Thank you for taking the time to post.

This must be the least "quirky" piece that you have ever made.

I'm with Mike with AD not being a favoured style of mine but the workmanship, quality and fitting are just as we come to expect from your good self. :eusa-clap: :eusa-clap:

Halo Jones wrote:Lovely work. Could you describe how you get such accurate scribing? This is something I always struggle with. I always get it close but nothing near as nice as in your photos!

Cheers Halo. Yes, of course... There are a few ways to scribe and there are so many different scribes as well - skirting boards, coving, walls, ceilings, floors etc... An out-of-plumb straight or bumpy wall for example; I would normally use a compass to mark the scribe. Once you know how much material you are removing, offer the work against the wall ensuring it's plumb and level; then open your compass to the correct width and literally run the compass down the wall so the pencil (or lead) is marking the cut line on the work. You can also use the compass for the coving, but this is much more tricky as it's imperative you keep the compass perpendicular to the scribe at all times (including down the wall), otherwise your scribe won't be accurate. I also use a square or small rule to mark the datum points IE: corners of the coving etc.

Hope this all makes sense.

I'll open a thread and do a proper WIP with photos.

Thanks also for the detailed fitting WIP, something I tend to struggle with, so very helpful to see how you do it.

Plus one for the scribing question. Also, a couple of posts back you said about marking the position of pilot holes for the hinges on the cabinet itself. I guess in this instance with no glass it was easy to do, but any tips on doing it with a solid door.

Last question is having pulled back the carpet is it down to you to cut and refit it?

Terry.

Cheers Terry, yes, exactly the same way. If hanging a full size door, approach the door into the hanging edge so that the bottom corner of the door is further in to the lining, then cock the door over so you can effortlessly line up a top hinge pilot hole and get a screw started. Then pull the door out and line up a bottom hinge pilot hole and all should be good. Hope this makes sense.

The carpet is the client's responsibility. 8-)

Once you know how much material you are removing

it's imperative you keep the compass perpendicular to the scribe at all times

I'm pretty sure these are the two bits that I struggle with!

I am never so far out that I can't just add a little bit of caulking to make it look fine but I would like to raise my game a bit. Looks like I just need more practise!

If you struggle ..
Scribe to a piece of Card or something, until you get it perfect, then just transfer the shape to your work.

I popped in to see these peeps last Thursday to measure up the other fitted case for the living room. While I was there, I took a photo of the recent oak case which is now earning its keep.

It's always nice to see one of your jobs settling into its new resting place and doing what it was designed to do.

Beer night tonight - again!
