Bookcase/display cabinet (ebony handles fitted)

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

When I saw this on YouTube I immediately thought of you...

Not suggesting there is anything wrong with your method, but thought you may be interested in an alternative option.

I've just tried this for final buffing of the tops of the plugs and it works really well - thanks for the suggestion.

Finished glazing the doors today and rehung them. The back is also fitted and stained but not polished.

The inside of the doors gives away the fact that the muntins are dummies if you look closely, but I dont feel it's really a big deal. Wow, that glass is really filthy !!!

Image

Afternoon off to go view an exhibition of leather goods in St Yrieix. Tomorrow I start to fit the ebony dummy pegs and make some handles. After that there are just two more shelves to make but I'd like to get the main cabinet out of the workshop - it's too crowded and the adjustable shelves can be fitted once it's in its final home in the house.

Fitted the ebony plugs today. To make sure they all line up correctly I decided to make some little jigs in MDF that locate against the edges of the carcase and doors respectively, then drilled the jigs for the hole locations so i could reproduce each position accurately. The jigs were designed to be revesible so that left and right sides match exactly. Heres the result :

Image

I'm a bit undecided about what to use for a door handle, so made this mock up in scrap quickly on the BS, and fitted it with one screw. I've decided I quite like the idea of mimicing the cloud lifts in the muntins etc, but that it's too big. Will make a scaled down version tomorrow and try that. If it looks right, I could make the real ones with an ebony spline set into the back.

Image

Then again... the media cabinet which will be in the same room, had solid ebony bar as handles - might go for that...?
It would create another design link between the two pieces.

Looking very good. I'd go for ebony myself.

Yep if they're in the same room then the handles should match, or be completely different.

Like veryone said, the ebony is the best option :

Good decision I think.

Tomorrow Isabelle's 6' 6" son arrives to help me move it ! It's going to be fun 'cos it's too big to go through the doors except on its side... I think I'll take the doors off to reduce the weight. I'm not feeble, a bag of cement is no great effort, but with the doors on even lifting one end is a struggle - the glass alone weighs a ton.

It looks gorgeous David. The design has defiantly grown on me while following this and the execution of course is excellent.

Bloody hell, that's nice. I'll go against the flow and say I prefer the first handle, not the ebony.......but it's no biggie.

Only one thing catches my eye, and that is the termination of the slanted glazing bars in the top glazed panels. They just sort-of stop against the underside of the top rail, which doesn't acknowledge their existence. The bottom rail has a detail announcing their arrival there, but there is nothing at the top.

Anyway, lovely work, beautiful details. I've never liked glazed cabinets, so the glass will spoil this one a bit for me, but nonetheless, one to be really proud of.

Interesting that you should comment on the tops of the doors relative to the glazing bars. I based my design on a cabinet I'd seen elsewhere and this is how it was done... But, going back to original G&G, in this case their Gamble House in Pasadena, I see that they did in fact have have a detail on the underside of the top :

I'd never noticed it. Well spotted Mike - too late now of course :( :(

It's finally installed in passage between the kitchen and the sitting room at Rue-Darnet as planned. Nearly killed JB (Isabelle's son) getting it there.

We had to put it down to rest every few yards and when we got to the house we had to rotate it and then turn it back the right way once inside the room - it is quite a bit taller than the internal doors.

JB has just left for Paris, he starts his new job on monday : a jurist with the French Ice Hockey Federation. He will handle legal representation for Federation members and also disclipline hearings regarding player behaviour. Interesting eh ?

That's exactly what we did - my version is not so sophisticated, it's a simple loop of 15mm rope for each person, but it does exactly the same job. The key is to be able to stand upright and to have your arms at a good working position.

Yep, what they said, very nice indeed.

Greene & Greene is an absolute favourite of mine but sadly there's very few pieces that would work in my house. I'm planning on a revamp of the master bedroom when the workshop's up and running though so perhaps I can convince SWMBO to trust me...
