Thanks Rod, it did go quick didn't it. It was only a dinky wadkin. My next one could be a bit more involved.
I had a small eureka moment whilst lying in bed as you do, I run my 3 phase stuff via a static converter which is adjustable depending on hp requirements. You soon know if you have it set incorrectly for a specific motor. I wonder if the motor is too small for the statics lowest setting? Hmm

Switch on another larger machine first and then try your drill and see if it behaves better. The bigger motor will change your converted into a sort of rotary one.
