wadkin JQ restoration

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

I've had a change of mind and decided to do this little sander instead of the LQ. I'm going to leave the LQ smeared in plus gas for a while. I got this from a foundry pattern shop in Bolton that was closing. I've had it a couple of years and its a lovely thing.
When I started stripping it I noticed it still has a lot of original wiring which is well past its best, the cloth was starting to drop to bits so its probably a good thing I chose this one.

The motor housing fins look ace on this one...Wallace you're spoiling us with another restoration so soon 8-)

Just like the automobile...how did we manage to loose such beautiful styling of objects?

Jim you wouldn't think but the motor is only 1hp, I nearly had a hernia lifting it off

So how big is it? 18"? 24"? Either way, I bet the paper isn't cheap.

At least this should be pretty simple once you get it apart. Two bearings, wire, and paint. You can knock it out on a weekend!

Its 16" and like you say Kirk shouldn't take long :D. It has loads of layers of paint which has protected everything really well. For sand paper I got some belts off a big drum sander cheap, just cut a disc and glue on.

Heres the cover for the trip box, I like to use paint stripper on something like this to protect any detail.

Image

I think this paint job must have been in the late 70's early 80's. Wadkin brought out a 'supersaw' with literature of this colour.

Image

What is a single phase preventor?

Image

Its lost a couple of its corners, any ideas on how to fix. Maybe build up with braze and file?

Image

I started remove the 8 layers of paint and it has done a great job of protecting the metal, no rust. I think the people casting at wadkin must of had a really good day because these casting are really nice with very little evidence of fettling. The surface is perfect for a paint finish.

It is a single phasING preventor

This will stop the motor trying to run with one phase missing. It would not start with only 2 out of 3 phases present but should one phase fail when running, it will continue running but badly and likely to draw excess current through the two remaining windings.
The device may have voltage sense coils as well as the current overload but may just use current sensing.

I've never had one in my hands but have heard about them.

Bob

Edit: Just a thought. If it is voltage sensing, then it could well require an neutral connection as well as the three phases? Dis-connect with caution and photos - if it is not too late!

Phase loss prevention is fairly common in American made motor starters. All three phases must be present for the starter to hold in the 'on' position. However, I've never seen a separate phase loss protection device.

I got the sanding disc separated from the motor.

A bit progress, scotchbrighted the table

Image

Cleaned up the lettering with the dremmel and removed some casting marks

Image

Took the motor to bits to check things out.

Image

A well maintained motor, I was the first inside and the bearings are still good

Not the perfect weather for painting but needs must.

A couple of days later I started assembling things and wondered why the motor wouldn't line at all. After a good 15mins I realised I rebuilt the motor backwards.

All done. I had a nightmare with the starter and single phase preventor. Before I took this to bits everything worked fine but something must have happened whilst I was working on it. I took loads of pictures to refer back to. I replaced a couple of wires where the insulation was perished. Anyway would it heck play nice when all put back together. After 4 days of messing with it I gave in and installed a modern starter. I managed to use the original start / stop buttons which is good.
