Painted MDF fitted unit.

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Painted MDF fitted unit.

I've changed the title instead of creating a new thread.

...I thought I'd post a straight forward job I've almost finished. Although, this should have been done a few weeks ago. No WIP with this job.

It's an MDF painted fitted unit for books etc. I made an oak unit a while ago for the same client. The painted jobby is for their living room where the oak was for the dining room. I would have gone for oak again, but an off-white paint finish was the brief.

The pelmet and plinth aren't attached at this stage. My shop is now full of bits all over the place ready for painting. I don't normally like painting that much, but I'm organised and I'm going put on some Beethoven cd's while painting this lot. I might even play some J S Bach too. Marvellous! 8-)

Roughly 8' x 8'.

Also, I thought I'd post up this non-commissioned project I designed and prepared back in the 90's - the 90's were my most creative years. Harrods liked this a lot back then, but we never struck a deal.

This would be an amazing project to make. Full of moving parts and all sorts of other features and materials including oak, ebony, maple, walnut, glass, granite, leather, fabric, metal and more.

I would be in my element if I was making this beauty.

That stuff would look good in Kirk's renovated gothic house.

Okay, I finished this job today and very pleased with the way it turned out.

It's all MDF apart from the book shelves which are pine.

Here is the work in the shop ready to load onto the bus.

This is the right hand tall unit. I've left the outer carcase in it's full length as I shall be cutting to length/scribing to the ceiling on site.
Image

This is the left hand tall unit with a scribe trim attached for scribing down the wall and skirting board.
Image

And the middle units.
Image

Now on site.

This is where the work is to be fitted.
Image

Image

Left hand tall unit scribed and fitted. This is my datum for the rest of the units.
Image

I though I'd show this too.
The property isn't that old and here's an example of the ceiling line over 2.4M. This is the pelmet which I've scribed to suit the contours of the ceiling and of course, the coving. A variation of about 15mm although you can't see it clearly, but it's there. Nothing abnormal about this, just a point of scribing to suit whatever age the property.

And now the work fully finished. The colour is 'Antique Ivory'.

A bit closer.

Clients are very happy indeed.

Ah ha. I wondered if anyone was going to comment on that - I should have guessed it was going to be you chap!

Yes, or course, the colour is much more softer in reality with no hint of pink at all

Think I asked you previously and you said you hand paint everything - no spraying. Something I couldn't imagine doing. Doubly impressive!

Mt clients have emailed finished photos to me showing the carpet refitted and the case now fully loaded. They don't hang about. 8-)

The main part of their brief was for the unit to blend in with the walls so it doesn't appear too intrusive to the room, which is why they didn't go with oak again. I think it's done exactly that. 8-)

This is from the hall looking into the living room - daytime.

Nice Paul,

What a demonstration of how proud the clients must be of the piece when then send you photos :eusa-clap:

Nice to see Merlin again...I saw our local mannequin the other day, she'd come out for halloween, I was going to take a snap...but then I started thinking about night vision cctv and bottled it  ...Will try again soon.

That's very smart, Paul.....how did you finish the scribe against the wall ? Decorator's caulk and a fine paint line ? Doing that long ceiling scribe must have been very tricky. Did you have a helper to hold it up in position while you made the scribe line ?

Pucka job as always Paul. How far less imposing and softer it looks once furnished.

Certainly fulfils the brief for me Paul.

One thing that keeps catching my eye, that upper left hand cupboard door, looks on the photo's like it has a big bow in it along the length Appears to be sticking out at the top. Could just be the photo's but the shadow gap appears large there and looks quite pronounced on the 3rd to last photo too.

I guess it doesn't look that way in the fle…erm… MDF.

Paul,

I know you've kept the spans short but are you confident the MDF shelves won't sag under the weight of the books.

I need to make something similar to fit an alcove and was considering using lipped ply to ensure the shelves don't sag.

Thanks

If I understood Paul correctly the shelfs are actually the only parts in Pine. However I have made a number of items out of MDF and even though it isn't proper wood it does work very well. What are the dimensions of the shelves you are looking at making Jon?
