Alcove Shelving

Postby Pinch » 23 Nov 2016, 20:01

Hi All,

I thought I'd post this up as Jon (Norty Raskel) is looking for some advice on his alcoves, so if you stumble across this Jon, hope it helps. 8-)

My clients are looking to form some shelving in their alcoves and make it sort of integral to the fire surround - very straight forward job.

Here are the alcoves and the fire surround which I'm yet to install.
Image

The idea here is to make two separate cases using 18mm MDF and 18mm finished thickness softwood timber (25x200 PAR) - to be painted by the clients. Instead of fitting the shelves to the alcove walls, I've gone with this idea because I think it looks neater and a plinth will be formed with a skirting running into the fire surround plinths.

I've made these cases with an overall 40mm tolerance across the widths and 20mm tolerance on the height - both alcoves are out-of-plumb and the heads are slightly out-of-level.

Here are the cases made in the shop and ready to go. They're both roughly 1100 wide, 2100 high and 580 deep.

Shelves are timber Jon ;) I would have gone for thicker, but clients didn't want to.
Image

Image

I shall slide these into the alcoves, set them up and screw fix them to the walls and trim up afterwards, plus a skirting board running across the plinths into the fire surround.

Hope that makes sense.

Report back soon.

Hey, I hope Bob doesn't that! Plug'oles

The client is bringing one in each alcove forward which will be cut into the backs of the cases. Is all I shall do is cut the 'oles. 8-)

Ah ha - yes :D

Well, originally 'no doors' was the brief but today, the clients have decided they now want doors. But sadly, no fire surround. I took the old one back to the shop tonight for a small repair. I'll be back on site tomorrow late morning 8-)

Hi Paul,

Thanks for this thread, I'm definitely watching, I've been very busy the last few weeks hence no response to your original thread where I should have read more thoroughly

Cheers Erich, I should have them done sometime during next week. I can only work on site at certain times as the lady is a Reiki Healer and she works from home. :|

You have a keen eye Mark :D I did not notice it until you posted the question.

Hope you don't mind me jumping in here Mr Pinch, but it looks to me like it's just stood in place waiting to be fit, I could be wrong though.

I do seem to pick out odd details!

I thought that myself but if you look again it is standing on the hearth and isn't as wide as as it. I thought surrounds usually stood completely on the floor aside the hearth or completely on it whereas this would straddle the edges of the hearth.

I'm sure there's a logical answer, I just can't see it.

Work this one out chaps.... Cheers Mark, I see what you mean and yes, Mark is right and no worries Mark - you are indeed right. I think Mark's eye must be one for great detail, as you rightly quoted Mark. Trouble is, if Mark didn't mention this, Mark could have been wrong, but then, I guess Mark wouldn't have mentioned this either. But on the other hand, Mark could be a magician testing the waters and Mark could have taken the bait. My guessing is though... I'm being a knob head and rambling on.

Indeed, but, I would have overshot the overhang of the deep shelf if doors were in the original brief. I might set them in by 6mm. :|

I'm saying nuffink

Nah, you're absolutely right chap - in fact so is Mark :?

The fire surround was waiting to be fitted and was leaning against the wall on the pizt - tis now fitted. In most cases, the surround will sit on the hearth and the hearth's width is normally in line with the mantle. But in this case, the clients bought this old mahogany surround at a reclamation yard and I've had to cut the plinths over the hearth. It's looking pretty cool though - although slightly unconventional. I'll post up the piccies next week.

:text-bravo:

Mark, I don't mind you jumping in at all chap - no probs and you're spot on.

I hope it's not more than great or blue ???

else it's not a word that should be used !

If must, then Twunt covers a variety of inflammatories without being an actual word ... still to be used sparingly though ...

You're right, it's not more than 'great' or 'blue',
or 'twunt' when the inflammatories land in one's shoe.
But it's 'Twinkle' when things are good, and 'Winkle' when things are bad.
'*' when things are gentle and 'Tiger' when I'm acting the lad.
Overall though, she calls me a name beginning with 't' that rhymes with fart.

But I like your thinking chap!

I tend not to like crass words spoken out loud (or typed)

but .. the good ole "carry on" type humor does make me chuckle sometimes ..
like, in the workshop, I have a blue "tit" peck at the sealant on the window most days..

I always think to myself, it's nice to see tit's out the window !

Yes I must admit, crass words used unnecessarily isn't very nice and the one Mrs P calls me is the 'tw' word.

Looking through my photo files the other day, I also found a small cam cord vid I made when Mrs P and me were walking Colin in the meadows (about 4 years ago) and I asked her to tape me doing the famous Spike Milligan 'hospital pass'. As I watched the tape the other day and the joke was done, I could faintly hear Mrs P sigh and mutter the 'tw' word. I didn't hear this on the day. made me laugh it did

I sadly don't see any titties out of my workshop window. :|
