I think they are walnut slithers, Rich :D

Very nice box Andy, bit more to it than you are making out though ;)

That's a good looking box Andy, I very much like those splines, they look slick and would be rather a bit easier to make then some of the more fancy joining techniques, so something I can try! :D

Andy, what is the black line across the top?

Erich, the cutting part is easy with a jig for the table saw, it's the trimming off afterwards of the bits sticking out and not damaging the box.

They were made on the table saw with the box clamped to a lump of 4x2. Make sure you use a blade that has the teeth FTG, flat top ground, or you will get a V shaped groove.

Thanks Mark, simple angled cut on the TS. Cutting the slices of walnut for the top was the hardest part.

Thanks Erich, like everything else accuracy is key. I actually think it is easier to make close fitting dovetails than accurate mitres. As I said above make sure you have a FTG saw blade to make the grooves for the splines.

Phil, that is just a natural grain in the wood. Here is a shot of the top.

Very nice inlay with the oak there chap. You mentioned it's walnut - is it a two leaf burr walnut inlay? I do like oak and walnut together. 8-)

As I say, don't look too closely. It is actually 4 pieces and not from a burr just cut from the end of a lovely piece of figured walnut that a local UKW forum member gave me many years ago.

I agree with you about oak and walnut. I find walnut very easy to work with and very easy to get a very good finish on.
