As we're doing boxes at the mo

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

As we're doing boxes at the mo

Postby Tusses » 05 Dec 2016, 21:54

I made a few of these as pet "coffins" .. gerbils, gold fish etc.
Knocked out loads at a time
About 10" long

all done on the TS ..
Mitered architrave for the sides, glued and pinned with a small finish nail gun

just cheap pine/whitewood for the top, raised on the TS. Rebated to fit the box.

Sides were rebated to accept a ply base insert, glued and pinned.

I think I used to sell them for £10-15 each unfinished

The only pic I could find at the mo ...

I think it's this blinkin cold I've had for the last week or so. This on top of the other stuff has knocked me back a little bit, plus, my scan date has come through for next Monday evening which is a bit concerning as I thought they normally take ages, but I'm sure all will be okay - just want to get it over and done with. I'm going to take Beethoven's 5th Symphony with me to listen to during the scanning. 8-)

I think if you're geared up to machine-make all sorts of boxes, this could be a nice earner. People always like pretty/cute boxes. There's also a personalised 'ashes box' which might be worth considering. Mrs P has a few with previous pet's ashes in them. When I first met her and saw these boxes, I made a silly joke asking if they were previous hubbies, but of course not, they still contain ashes of her much loved pets. 8-)

yep ... used to make earn/ashes boxes, and I'd etch (laser printer and FeCl) a brass plate with the name and details.
and I used to make them out of Ash ! just cuz I like twists like that.

Plus Ash is really cheap, and can be made to look quite like oak.

I really ought to make something from real wood again ! .. I hate MDF !!!!!!

I have a few 1" and 2" boards of Ash, Oak, and a bit of good old fashioned Mahogany  hanging between the roof joists .. getting on for 20 yrs ago since buying it now.

Also, I have a few sheets in various thickness's of the old Birch Ply .. from when it was very good quality . no voids/patches etc. ..
ooh .. just remember I have Oak faced ply there too :D

I keep way tooooo much stuff "for best !
but the new stuff isn't the same any more

The Cheap MDF stuff has taken a huge hit in recent years, with cheap chinese CNC's and Lasers flooding the market. It was very good and easy money before that !
So Wifey and I have already made the decision to start a new venture in the new year. Better Quality and better money ... heres hoping :eusa-pray: !!

Rich, do you have a website?

I've been Googling 'wooden boxes uk' and these prices are unbelievably low! They would have to be made in copious bulk to be worth a return.

http://www.thewoodenboxmill.co.uk/

This site is a 'craft' site and still low low prices generally.

http://www.cc-craft.co.uk/products/deco ... oden-boxes

I would like to make a bulk of various crafty products and do a few craft fairs. Mrs P has often said about making smaller furniture items to sell at a craft fair, but I've never seen the point. Maybe she's right. Hmmmm.... it's the old chestnut thing I guess.

PS: just read your one above. Yes, indeed, my little grey cells are fidgeting around now

Never got round to doing a web site.
I mostly sold on FB and Ebay .. but I've just cancelled all the listings.

I guess , with everyone wanting more/quicker/cheaper ...
stress hasn't helped my tummy/head problems.
I've been really quite unable to function for a while.
And it started to show with my dispatch times.

These days you are competing with hobbyists .. who bought a laser/cnc for a couple of hundred££
and just run it in the spare bedroom for beer/pin money

oh well .. new start next year :-)

I'll have a look at the links you posted later , ta

Thanks :D

but

I tell you what .. it's a lot bloody harder than a 9-5 stacking shelves !

At 1st you think, you don't have a boss .. which is part true ..
But you soon realize your customers are worse than a boss sometimes !
An think ... Hmmmm... stackin' shelves .... ! ... "Spook"

When it's good, it's good .. when it's bad, it can be the worst !
I've done everything from trainee TV repair .. to IT manager.
OK .. IT manager .. the money was good ! ;)

It all started loong loong ago, in the mid west .. (west mids) ..
The Wifey (gold digger) at the time maxed out all the cards , and ran off with someone who earned more !
(leaving the kids with me, and the cards - a lot  )
So I decided to quit the IT job, and opened my very own computer shop.
New .. Builds .. Repairs etc.

hmmm then about 6 months later PC world opend ! oops !
Then computers went the same way. Cheaper and cheaper ...
I was a single dad of 3, youngest was 18mnths
so built a creche in the shop and my customers accepted this.

I was quite successful .. oops !
Ex wifey decided she wanted the kids back and CSA instead :( :o :?
Spent about £20k in custody battle in total

Anyway .. all very stressfull .. so I shut up shop one day and went home in the afternoon .. put on the TV .. "Norm" was on ! :eusa-clap:
That was it !
I sold all the stock, and built a workshop out the back of the house, and been making sawdust ever since ! :D :D :D :D :D

it would be a last resort when I find myself looking for a job again, even rather than just working for crumbs ! .. there's always the hope :-)

I'm still paying the cards off BTW :(

it's enough to make you a bit eccentric maybe ! .. "Spook" .. "Slither" baby

New Wifey is Ace by the way :)
So apart from the Ex still being a complete PITA ! .. Life isn't so bad :obscene-drinkingcheers:

Bloody globalisation !

Seriously, I know exactly what you mean. Are there any upmarket aka charge-more niches you could go for ?

Which scan, Pinch ?

Yes, that's what the next plan is, ditch the anything for a penny thousands at a time , which a lot of them go for, market, along with doing more unique woodwork lines, top quality materials and nearly all end customer finished products, and including the CNC and laser .. with the idea that there are less people with that complete skill set.

I've seen it coming for a couple of years, always kept half an eye on the falling prices (keeping mine up, for my customers who appreciate the good quality and service) .. but been soo busy and blinkers on just churning out order after order, this year just came and smacked us up are ar$e !
Everyone left it till last minute and wanted it ASAP .. as a one man band, I think I just cracked under the pressure ! .. usually the Christmas orders come in as early as March !
This year, most of them came all at once in Oct/Nov. so being quiet all year, and funds low .. I had to try and take as much as poss.

Designs I would used to make blank .. sell in bulk for a tenner each (it was silly easy money - £1 a minute machine time) .. my customer would paint and make pretty and sell for £20 .. the world has caught on, and you find completely finished and decorated shapes in poundland !

Anyway .. I have stuff that needs making, and a BIG box to fill and take to parcel force tonight for a next day delivery ! .. yes, they left it a bit late !
They still have to paint everything and then post it out again to their customer !

So I'll be quiet for a bit now ....................................

you go up diddy up up, and you go down diddy down down !

After studying martial arts for years, I'm quite into the Ancient Chinese philosophy ..
Lao Tzu said in "Tao te Ching"
something like..

"When you are on top of the mountain ..
you need to go down to the depths of the valley,
to climb the next mountain "

I've misplaced my fav translation of that book, but I have others.

I've yet to complete the I-Ching !

Try to keep your mind at peace, whatever is going on around you !
