Chopping board Christmas present

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Chopping board Christmas present

Postby woodstalker » 09 Dec 2016, 21:18

So i struggled (like i do most years) as to wha to get Mum for Christmas and i decided that since i couldn't think what i wanted to do i would make something. So i had a look on youtube for some ideas and settled on some of the end grain chopping board videos and set about trying to emulate them.

This is my first proper woodwork so its not perfect but i think has turned out pretty well. I made some mistakes along the way partly due to rushing bits, partly due to a few machinery shortcomings and mainly due to incompetence. It added a fair bit of extra work but i plan on making another one for our kitchen and i will definitely learn from these mistakes, which is the point!

Anyway here are the pictures, i got some walnut and maple offcuts off eBay which were near enough the size i needed so that saved some work:

Cut to rough size on the bandsaw:

Image

used my Screwfix Titan PT to plane them and then thickness to the same dimensions:

Image

Making an absolute mess in the process (no proper extraction yet)

Ready for first glue:

I'm reliably informed that Santa is bringing me some more appropriate clamps...
Image

Back through the band saw and ready for second glue, sadly wasn't very accurate due to lack of a fence on the bandsaw so made a load more work for myself flattening this lot out. Did it in two halves that would fit on the Planer thicknesser, then glued the two together but still managed to get a slight step d'oh:

All glued up and ready for routing and sanding:

Cut out finger slots on the bottom so it can be lifted.and went over with round over bits to smooth all the edges.
Image

Then after a huge amount of sanding and the purchase of a ROS i applied the first coat of finish just now. Bottom:

So second coat tomorrow some time. As i said, not perfect but i think my mum will love it and it has taught me a few lessons for next time and i have found out more about my tools and their limitations/capabilities.

Thanks for looking :D

That's really nice. I like that a lot.

I watched this recently and found it useful.

Cheers Malc,

i was inspired by an early Woodwhisperer video, just subscribed to Jordsworkshop too. Would like some more UK based channels to follow if you have any you could recommend? I have a couple but most channels seem to be US based and they tend to do things differently based on what tools and materials are available to them, which are not necessarily the same as here.

I myself have only just come into looking/watching online only recently having retired. Jord's is the only one I've subscribed to, so I've no idea what else is out there.

I've threatened my whole family with chopping boards next year!

If that's your first piece of proper woodwork then you've certainly done a good job - it looks really nice.

Cheers Andy, cheers Rod,

To be fair I made it a lot more difficult than it needed to be but I'm really pleased with the result. I also still have a load more if the walnut so am planning to do another one since Mrs Woodstalker commented on how much she liked this one. I am out of maple though but do have some bits of oak so might use that. There's some amazing ones on YouTube.

This one for example:

Anyway I have also been admiring all the boxes being made on here so may have a go at one over Christmas however I have some coursework to hand in at the start of January so that will take up a load of time.

There's some great channels, with loads of different projects, I am hoping to get better with sketchup and start to design some simple furniture and then hopefully make it. Got a workshop to build first. My micro workshop is too damn small and competes as a storeroom so the space is even more limited.

Excellent result, well done. This type of project is very hard to get right due to cumulative error and you look to be spot on so you should be proud of yourself!

Cheers Dave, Erich & Steve,

there are a few errors that show it is not shop bought and add 'character' but as mentioned i've learned a few lessons for next time.

Yeah i did notice as i was doing it i had made a rather nice chessboard, purely coincidental based on the size and number of offcuts i had... :)

Thanks Tusses, yes we had a nice bamboo chopping board that has finally fallen in two after one too many times in the dishwasher so needs a bit if a re-trim and glue up so willl include the instructions to Mum. Used titebond III so should stick fairly well, also its a bit too chunky to easily go in a dishwasher.

Woodwhisperer still going:

Final photo, second of finish now dried and little rubber feet on the bottom to stop it sliding around. Theres a tiny little wobble in it so will take tiny bit of one of the feet somehow to bring it level.

He is, but in terms of YouTube is not worth watching now IMHO. All his content seems to be on Guild site and YouTube is just for an hour long online chat session.

Presume you have found the guy who appears to have uploaded every single episode of Norm, gradually working through every series myself :D

Thanks Terry, i am basically working through the old content of those channels, to be fair i get the impression i have watched most of YouTube now, less the stuff aimed at people younger than me that i simply don't understand. But the older stuff is good and provides some good ideas and starting points.
