Turff stuff (shop mod's')

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Turff stuff (shop mod's')

First project in the shop is a little alcove project to be installed next week, it's quite paint heavy...with an oak top and doors. There's no crown molding, which might be a bit odd.

Starting to get a feel of how the space will work...I have to say it's nice being so close to home, especially for finishing coats. Yesterday I applied a coat, popped back for lunch and had a little snooze infront of the tele ...still recovering a little after a trip to the NHS hotel for a couple of nights ...turned out to be an acute viral infection in my tummy...even tho the scalpel keen registrars wanted to cut my gal bladder out!...thankful the consultant agreed with me!...wasn't fun hugging the floor of A&E... but well on my way to recovery now

Nice, Jim. I like the mix of wood and MDF.

Hi Rod,

The upper book-casing is made up of 7 boxes biscuit glued together (and to each other), then glue face framed/lipped, the shelves within are on adjustable 5mm pins. There will be some discreet fixings at the top to stop the whole structure toppling forward.

That looks like a a very nice workshop, clean tidy (ish) and a very tidy looking Alcove unit too.
I'm looking at purchasing a new panel saw and could not help noticing yours in the picture. What's the make and model if you don't mind me asking?

Will you be hand painting or spraying the unit, I'm guessing hand painting :eusa-think:

Hi Mark,

The saw is an SCM si150, circa 98, I've not had it long, any questions do ask...my main criteria was 3ph, 5hp min and a scoring unit, it's a bit on the big side...especially the rip capacity, so I may doctor it...of course I've not long finished the shop, so being a bit precious and keeping things tidy. I would normally spray finish, but my old booth is massive, I need to make something smaller...

Ironically when I was in hospital, lying in bed with one sock on, I was eyeing up the curtain tracks... thinking about knock down spray booths...the biggest problem I find is when you have limited space it's time consuming setting up to spray and unless you've loads of finishing it's just not worth it. I'll only spray waterborne. However saying that knocking out the green dye of the MR MDF has taken 2 base, 3 top! (rollered)... With Morrells ...It would of been, one coat high build primer, 2 top...and their waterborne sets up fantastic, really hard.

Bit of a ramble that.

Thank you for the reply Jim, I do a temporary sheet up for spraying then disassemble after, that's all I know!

I'm interested in knowing more about the saw, maybe you could do a mini review good/bad points :D (NOT REALLY) but I may ask a couple of questions about the spray paint etc you use and a couple about the panel saw.

The unit looks very tidy.

A good start on the installation today, hopefully all done tomorrow...there has been a ...

'Oh, Jim...while you've got your tools out'

Some WIP shots...

Ply plinths, I use threaded M8 bolts into Tee nuts into the pine corner blocks... level the plinth then with a spanner. Some times I put a hole right through the blocks and using longer bolts, you can grind a slit in the top...so you're dialing up n down with a screw driver from the top. Always looking for new ideas here.

When level, I fix the plinth down, screw into skirt (where I can) and some brackets or modest blocks to the front....

(My furniture mate is too posh to use MOD blocks....I usually tape one in his Christmas card, I did once drop one in his pint, how he laughed. Not. )

Biscuits (dry) to locate the cabinets...

Image

Some jobbing joinery cut outs...

Return detail...

Quick n Lazy notching with the trimmer..., wouldn't do this to a nice period skirt...honest. The walls are really good, I've been able to cut my scribes with the track saw!

Image

Face trim...

Image

Taped in place with 5 min glue..smaller bits are held in place with mitre mate

A couple of wall fixes in the top corners (out of sight)

Oaky doakee...

7 boxes...

And thanks me done (in)

Looking good Jimmy :eusa-clap:

The real bonus of having a workshop on your own property is the non-existent overheads when it's not in use.
For me that means being able to take on a range of work outside of woodworking & not having to worry about covering rent, rates etc

Thanks chaps, very true Doug, I'm hoping to do more work from home!

Didn't get round to taking many shots today, most of it was straight forward chipping away. Scribing the top into the coving was fun!

Here's a noobie tip for door handles.

Backing out for a clean exit, I also pre drill / score spinning the lip n spur bit in reverse for a clean entry

Image

I highly recommend the adjustable pressure, speed clamps...work a bit like mole grips really handy, I'll post the brand if anyone is interested.

Here we are finished...

Hope it's been useful...and if course entertaining
