Very old helical (cough cough) stair - FINISHED

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

That's unorthodox, supporting each of the first few steps in the way you have, but I can't really see much option. Well done.

Why didn't you just haul that post out so you could slide in a whole new stair?

how's it like in use pinch ? .. it looks really tight ?
The only one I've seen that tight was for an attic room

Ours wouldn't pass BOC these days , or the hall upstairs which is about 24" wide !

My dad has such a steep staircase, it's like climbing a ladder

Love these old buildings :-)

Good evening folks. 8-)

I finished this project today and here are the final pictures...

Firstly, I have the ground-to-first floor stair to do in the future, but they also want to do something with the stair leading down to the basement. I've already given the clients various options to consider - one is to get rid of the hatch and include the basement stair within the theme of the ground floor stair. We shall see what happens in good time.

Here is the basement stair.
Image

Right then, moving on...

I remember talking about signing & dating work and I often make little notes which are then covered up until the day comes when the work is either ripped out or dismantled. I've dated this project today - all sensible and nothing silly. Now covered up for many years to come - hopefully.
Image

A couple of views from the living room. The top treads & risers were interesting as these are suspended from the ceiling. All of this side of the work will be painted white. A couple of the walls and ceiling are to be plastered which is why I haven't made good the ceiling and wall.
Image

Small bookcase also in. NB: The dark unpainted areas are where the old stair was and not open joints - these little fellas are as tight as a crab's....
Image

Image

I'm laying on the floor looking up to the underside.
Image

And now the top stair side of the stair - the bit one walks up. :)
This is the best angle I could capture to get in as much of the stair as poss in one frame.
Image

Moving up... The plasterer will be making good the walls.
Image

Image

Image

The top - The plywood cladding is one of the elements in securely connecting the top two treads & risers to the 2nd floor ceiling.
Image

As you can see, all the cuts are lovely and tight all down the post. This will obviously look much better once painted.
Image

Image

And finally, from the 2nd floor landing.
Image

This stair is a bit like one of those old cathedral/church stairs leading up to the spire.
Image

Well, that's it. Nice little job and enjoyed being away from the shop for a while.

Any questions or comments are welcome.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers.

Same thoughts here. I would most certainly need some hand support going up or down.
