wadkin JTA restoration

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Here we go again folks. You don't realise how big these machines are until your next to one. This is in pretty bad condition.

Everything is heavy so a block and tackle is needed

The electrics were 'modernised' maybe 30 years ago presumably when it got its lovely coat of green paint.

Image

The hinges snapped when I opened the electric panel, that's the first time I've had that happen so I think this has stood outside for quite a while.

That is one monster of a disc sander, getting a full size sheet for it could well be a challenge. I am looking forward to seeing the transformation take place.

More rust magically turned into shiny bits. can't wait :)

I did a quick search to see what a JTA was and found one for sale -only £4000 or £2750 working but not refurbished

I expect yours will end up better restored than that one.

Yep, that's...big. Bummer about the hinges. It doesn't look like you could have done anything about them, either.

Arrow-Hart starters? I hope they still work and the heaters are good. You can find heaters for them, but there's pretty scarce. I tried to fined new heaters for the A-H starter on my old Powermatic table saw, but never could find the right size. Eventually I sold the starter and bought another brand.

Bravo - another fine machine about to be saved from the scap merchant.
I dont have either the space or the equipment for this sort of restoration, but I do love seeing it done.
Cheers !

I find myself wondering why there are two contactors and two stop/start buttons.
Are there two motors? one to drive the disc and the other to --????

Yes Bob two motors. This is one that Jack got recently. I love the sound it makes when the disc gets up to speed.

AH! Thanks Mark.

I did not realise it was also a OSS as well as a disc sander

Wow what a machine!
What did they normally sand on it for it to be so big?

Fascinating! I can't believe how long the disc takes to spin down! I would also like to know what they are typically used for...

My little 16" disc takes a good 15mins to run down. Obviously theres very little friction because the disc is attached to the motor spindle and the disc has a huge mass. I would guess the big discs weighs about 8 stone.
These machines were used in pattern shops. My little disc is impossible to stall so god knows what the 30" is like

The bobbin has a neat way of lubrication the ways, it has a little resovoir that holds oil with wicks that take it slidy parts. This one was full of water.

Image

The sanding bobbin is well and truly rusted on, I tried levering it off and nothing, I heated it up and nothing, I left it swimming in plus gas overnight and it still wont budge

Image

This machine must of had a proper wack to break all of these castings.

Image

Image

It took me a while to work out how to get the motor and mechanism out.

Image

This machine must of been maintained pretty well before its accident. The bobbing mechanism is well greased and the ways are in good shape.

Good luck and take your time. Too bad it's been out in the rain like that.

I got everything stripped from the main casting and lifted of the pallet that was starting to succumb to the machines weight.

Luckily lots of grease

What's that gear made of to be that colour? Brass is too soft surely and bronze too expensive.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Almost certainly bronze Andy.
Quite common to find steel (or CI) running on bronze in quality machinery.
