The Corbridge Cabinet

Postby Woodbloke » 27 Apr 2017, 19:36

This little cabinet has just been finished and holds an exact copy of the Corbridge Hunt Cup, the original can be seen in the British Museum. It was found very close to Hadrian's Wall sitting on top of hoard of Roman gold coins. The replica was a gift from my daughter oop 'Narth and it's been displayed in a little teak cabinet.

Image

The pot is about 180mm high, so the cabinet isn't very big. The material is solid teak and teak veneers, finished with a couple of coats of Osmo and some posh Swedish beeswax over the top, applied with a grey Webrax.

Image

The back is a solid teak panel.

Image

The accent details are in Bog Oak which came from the ancient Roman port of Londinium via the centre of the USA...it's had an 8500 mile journey to get back to the UK!

Image

The frame is domino'd together and the round corners were bearing cut with a router.

Looks great Rob, touch of Jimmy Krenov, which I like. The wobbly detail groove is interesting.

Looks to be a superb example of your craftsmanship Rob!

Not sure about the brass screws?
They look too large compared to the beads and I think in any case I'd have used headless pins to retain the glazing beads.

Thanks Bob. The glazing bars are only 10mm wide and the screws are No.4 x 1/2" so it's a bit difficult to get anything smaller (I have got some No.3's somewhere, but not in that length) - Rob

Ah I had not appreciated the beads were that narrow. All the more reason to use headless pins really..

Lovely work as ever. I like the overall design, and the curves where the rails join the legs in particular.

That top front rail has a particularly dark grain or is it a shadow?

There is a bit of JK in there but the inspiration for this came from a 50's Scandi piece on my Pinterest account which seems to have gone walkabout

...which I've now found

ImageRosewood, Lacquered Wood and Brass Cabinet by William Christensen for Illums Bolighus 1950s.

This piece just blows me socks off  - Rob

Very nice Roberto

Couldn't be bothered to get rid of that router burn in the curves of the left side rail/stile though eh? Lazy!

How very dare you sir, casting those sorts nasturtiums on my routering! It happens that it's a darker piece of teak that was glued on to make the curve (all the joints are similar) - Rob

Looks really nice, worthy of JK ! :text-bravo:

On the other hand you could do with a better lens for your camera (unless the legs really are bowed).

Some of the portrait shots are a bit bendy, others not so. The landscape pics (not shown here) are better in that respect. It wasn't intentionally designed as a JK 'fluenced peice (he never did internal corners like that or a top rail on the frame as it's been done here) but it's just the way it turned out. C'est la gurerre :D - Rob
